Same problem here. Sure enough, I bought a FSR on eBay for about $50...just replaced it tonight and it works perfectly! It took me about 45 minutes start to finish. That baby is waaaaaaay back...

I have a lower mileage (35k) 2003 4.4i with Sport and I get about 14 MPG...FYI. No major mechanical issues at this point...I'm knocking on wood right now. :)

I don't have a BMW nav unit, but I've read dozens of threads with people complaining about them. It doesn't sound to be worth it.

I got a Garmin Nuvi for $350 and absolutely love it. Good luck!

Take a look on Craigslist for the rims...I was able to pick up some basic 17" BMW rims with 1 year old snow tires for about $500. Not as fresh looking as the 19's, but handles great in the snow.

I have a 2003 4.4 and I just had to replace my battery last month. It seems the consensus is about 4 to 5 years.
