This sounds similar what i just watched on 50skid video about his E46 same engine. Generic OBD was working but bmw specific was not. Turned out to be bad steering angle sensor shorting the can bus....

It's possible the rubber hose got disconnected at the sunroof. You can lower gently the headliner on that side and take a peak. You will need to remove a few things that hold it in place.
