Tire Insurance?
 

Apparently the manufacturers no longer offer a "road hazard warranty" on new tires. So the dealer wants to sell me an insurance policy for $750. Has anyone bought this? My sniff test is another dealer gimmick.

That seems ridiculous to me. I'm not sure what the exact current exchange rate is (somewhere around 9% last I saw), but tire rack has the OE Dunlop run flats for $429 front, $434 rear USD(assuming you have the sport package and 20" wheels on your 4.8i, otherwise, might be a little cheaper). So to buy that insurance policy you'd be paying as much a tire and a half. Seems like you'd be better off taking your chances......

Read the warranty that came with the tire, it is pretty good and covers punctures (see last section)

The warranty covers tire damage and replacement if punctured (in Canada it is illegal to plug a run-flat) It also covers damage to the rims. Replacement coverage is 5 years or $6000.00. I paid $500.00 CDN for mine and I think it is a worthwhile investment.

The tires basic warranty, which is included free covers these same things for 2 years as I read it.

Does it cover the actual rim? Have you ever tried to make a claim on one of these warranty's from the manufacturer? It is almost impossible to collect I have been through this a couple of times.

no, it does not include rim...only the tire.

I bought this, was $595 at my dealer who told me it includes tires and rims. Considering the runflats can't be patched or plugged, or so they say, i think it's a reasonable deal, especially the fact that it includes the rims.

All I am saying guys is that Michelin covers nails and will repair or replace road hazards for free for 2 years.. so factor that in to your equation.

For me, $500-$700 for insurance that is basicly covering my rims only is not a value. I cant recall the last time I damaged a rim.

from what I've been told by dealers, run flats can be repaired, but it's not a good idea. Best to check with the tire manufacturers I would think.
