I just bought the magazine and read the test. For those that want to know: C&D lets X5M win but...

Cayenne Turbo S 0-60 and 0-100 mph is only 0.1s slower and 0.3s faster 0-130mph.
Cayenne Turbo S top speed 177mph vs X5M 158mph (limited)
Cayenne Turbo S skidpad 0.91g vs. X5M 0.89g
Cayenne Turbo S braking 70-0mph 158ft vs. X5M 162ft

So the Cayenne appears to be a slightly faster car in practice (e.g. on a track) than the X5M. The reason the X5M gets first place is not performance based but based on better cargo space, better exterior styling, better transmission, and lower price.

FYI: I own a 2008 E70 X5 4.8i and my father owns a 2009 Cayenne Turbo S. I drove his car on the Autobahn and my personal impressions of the Cayenne Turbo S are:

+ extremely powerful
+ extremely stable and almost no wind noise at 140+ mph
+ very good finish (no plastic creaks like E70 X5)
- small and dated interior
- dated exterior

too bad I didn't allow for one of these in my budget this year.

Herr B makes some good points. I recently drove the Turbo S and X5 M back to back and my take is a bit different:
Both cars feel extremely powerful and stable (Atlanta traffic does not allow 140 mph speeds unfortunately).
The BMW comes across as more fresh and updated in terms of Interior and especially Technology.
The Turbo S exterior is more masculine, handsome, and captivating. It has a bit less storage space but it's a hot look.
For the money it's hard to consider the Turbo S. Since a total redesign will come out in the Spring you would think Dealers would aggressively try to move them off their lots. They are not.

One of the German mag tested the X6M and as usual they have used Hokemheim track as part of the test. The time from the X6M certainly is slower than the CTT S.

You can read on Porsche forums members talking that "X ///M is getting its 15 minutes of fame till the next Cayenne numbers are released".

BMW will definitely have an edge on the price point.

Fair points.

You didn't mention the turbo lag on the 'S' - which I found inexcusable.

The price delta cannot be explained beyond the Porsche badges.

4.0 sec flat!! That's supercar territory! Never mind sport sedans like the M5 or E55 AMG, there are lots of 'sports cars' that can't do that...

Well, if your point is that the Cayenne Turbo S is a kick-Ass vehicle, YOU'RE RIGHT. If your other point is that it is essentially equal to the X5//M in performance, YOU'RE ALSO RIGHT.

Tell ya what though: FOR $50,000 less, I WILL GLADLY TAKE THE X5///M !!:D
