That is what I am affraid of. Problems with this car seem to be across the board and rather systemic, typical of first year BMW's :banghead:

Update, I took the car in yesterday and took the shop foreman on a test drive. He thought that it may be normal, of course, and thought it was transmission noise. He is going to do some research and possibly drive some other cars to see if it is the same. i don't think it will be but we'll see. MB let us know what you find out on Monday..

I'll keep you posted. The foreman I drove with last time also initially said it may be normal but I told him the sound was not there the first several thousand miles so there is no way it is normal. Also, since they somehow managed to fix the noise temporarily shows it's not normal.

Yeah I told my foreman the same thing that it didnt use to do that. He acknowledged that i had many more hours in an M than he and I should know. problem is they will compare it to a 5.0 as there are no M's in the area. Not sure if it is the same transmission or what but I would assume it the 5.0 shouldn't do it either.

My car makes the sound if I rev it up in neutral/park. So, I don't think it's the transmission. It sounds like a bad pulley or something to me or something that is attached to the engine/belt since it goes up in pitch with RPMs.

My 50 is starting to do it too with only 1500k on the clock..:dunno:

Same problem here. Low RPMs, high pitched whining sound. Louder with acceleration. Not always there, maybe moreso when the weather is cold. Anyways, took it into the shop 2-3x, foreman heard it, he did some research...LOL, said it was normal. Anyways, doesn't affect performance, so just learning to live with it.

It almost sounds like a supercharger.. I'll start telling people that my X5 is a blown V8 Turbo! LOL

E53is 09-11-2010 04:41 PM

super charger haha, i had someone ask me if thats what the sound was. i can hear it in the car at stop lights now

mswaz 09-11-2010 05:47 PM

Its strange that after driving somewhat hard on the highway then going back to normal driving on side streets it goes away for a while then comes back. I really notice it between 1000 and 2000 RPM's. I would agree with them thats it normal if it did it from day one but it has recently just started.

Im still waiting to hear back from my foreman but don't expect to get many answers. It doesn't seem to be affecting performance but it sure is annoying.
