I think it was for petrol (gas). Not that it matters. It's nice to hear what the deisels do. We unlucky souls here in the states don't get the deisel option. Although lately I've noticed deisel fuel prices have been higher around here than Premium Gas!

Mentat 01-04-2006 02:01 AM

Maybe gas is cheaper, but the fuel economy on disel will cover this. The 3.0 disesel is the new king Europe and the 3.0d is crazy (0-100 Km/h in 7.7s).

Why you cannot have disesel in US ? It's Euro 4 !

mane 01-04-2006 05:25 AM

Yep, its 10-13l/100km in city, with automatic transmission (3.0DA). In Finland, diesel costs 0.99€, gas 1.3€. If you use diesel, you will have to pay some additional taxes, but it will come cheaper in the end.

Diesel has also huge over 500nm power. You cant get that from many gas cars.

Mentat 01-04-2006 11:34 AM

Yes, de 3.0d is awesome as power and it's a disesel that rivals whitout any problem with 3.0i :)

My dealer informed me the the car will be ready on 18 feb, but I'll receive it on 10-15 march...
The waiting is killing me !

Well, you have answered your own question on why you are getting such "poor" fuel economy...

What is "Euro 4"?
You can have deisel engines in the US. Ford and Dodge have big pickup trucks with deisels that are popular. You can get a VW w/ a deisel. But BMW does not offer the deisel engine here. If they did I would have bought one.

I used to transport cars for a job in the early 80's. Drove MB 300SD turbo deisels all the time. Back then deisel was almost half the price of gas. Now, probably because of popularity and better mileage, deisel fuel prices have risen to equal or more than gasoline. I saw premium gasoline for $2.39/Gal. and deisel was $2.49/Gal. at one place. Still, I would rather have the deisel X3.

Ah... OK. We have 'ULEV' designation. Ultra-low Emissions Vehicle (I think that's what it's called). Thanks for the link.

I have heard that you guys in US, dont have the same diesel has we have here in Europe.

Quote:

The main difference between availability of diesel cars in Europe and in the US is the fuel itself. "Common Rail" diesel engines found in Europe require a much lower level of sulphur in the fuel than the old-fashioned ones in the US. US refiners are supposed to transition to this low-sulphur fuel over the next N years (7? 10?). Until that happens, not much chance of getting that spiffy Volkswagen. Of course, the other thing is that European fuel taxes are MUCH higher on gasoline than they are on diesel, hence driving demand for the diesel vehicles.

So its not about the manufacturers, its only that the cars would not work in us.
