What is it about the V8's that make them so much more prone to failure? Just more wear and tear from a higher performance engine?

If I give up on mine, I'm going back to a pickup truck :P

I am also looking at the mazda6. What I don't like on the Passat are those ugly headlights....seems so 90s. And there is no way to upgrade them.

I personally think a spare car is needed if you want to own an off warranty, higher mileage X5. V8's especially. Then if a the X give you trouble, you park it while shopping for the best price on paying someone to fix it or to find the time to shop for the best prices on parts and the DIY that follows.
OP, sorry to hear about your troubles. A second on driving the Mazda 6 as well. Car and Driver has a nice review on both of those cars. |

Treat any old car as a toy and you'll be fine. Ask me how I know. |

The complexity of the alternator alone is laughable. I try to avoid Bosch parts, much less cars that are built using them. Denso stuff is so much more reliable on a whole. I wasn't looking for an X5 in the least bit, this one just kinda fell into my lap (and I'm still looking for a LandCruiser/Sequoia despite having gotten this). If BMW would just stop building chassis that were so enjoyable to drive, I would be able to swear off of them completely. The Japanese build cars that out-handle, out-accelerate, out-"comfort", the German cars with more amenities, and much better reliability, at a much lower price point. Even still, a few weeks ago when I delivered a friend/customer's new Lexus GS350 Type-F after doing some work to it, and got in my 240K mile 5-series wagon to come back to the shop, it felt like home. Not sure how they do it, but it's some sort of voodoo. |
Sorry Bro, I know the feeling Trust Me............I hope You get good money for your X5
