Remove the hvac control unit from the dash, take it apart to where you can clean the junk stuck on the temp sensing wire, you'll know it when you see it. Just like the element in a MAF, these can get nasty. See if that helps. Clean the dust off the little fan too while your in there.

Clutch appears to be working properly. The engine rev apparently doesn't work every time either. Sometimes you can turn it on after driving it awhile and it cools immediately and then other times it doesn't, but it never cools immediately after it's been parked for a few hours. This is very frustrating.

So now the AC doesn't cool at all!!!! My wife came home yesterday sweating worse than a hooker in church on Sunday morning. The aux fan is working however I don't know if it all the time. The compressor clutch is engaging, at least when I look at it. Soooooooooo any ideas at this point? I really don't want to go to a BMW dealer because it seems like nobody ever leaves there without a 2k less in their bank account than when they arrived.

I'm in the same situation as you now and came to this thread looking for answers.
2006 X5 3.0. AC has worked off and on since last summer. I hooked up a pressure gauge to the low side, it showed 190psi. Not good. I pulled the plug and the aux fan kicked on high. Put it back, back to off sometimes cycling on. Looked at the front of the AC unit, clutch is spinning when engaged, at least the entire pulley is, not just a portion of it. Sometimes it kicks on sometimes it doesn't. I drove to the store to get some r134a, drove back home and it was on. Checked pressure again, 30psi. Good. Used my gauge filler to purge it down to 10psi, filled it back up with the can to 35psi. Blew icy cold. Drove it again after it sat for a few hours, won't kick on, it's warm air blowing again. I Over the winter I have replaced the panel with new buttons and cleaned the temp sensor, so that's not the issue. Now I had this same issue on my 1998 F150. The fix was to pull the pulley off, pull the front off the AC unit, and pull a shim from the shaft and put it back on. It worked beautifully after that. Is this an option with a BMW AC unit? Has anyone tried this? It seems like the exact same issue where thr clutch will only engage sometimes due to the tolerance and the magnets not picking up all the time. |
