OK, grabbed this one from a 2006. 84106963798 with a build of 13.09.2005. Voice recognition and Bluetooth. Thanks for your help Qsilver7!

Yes, that one should work.

I was putting the info below together as you were posting the information above. Hopefully it can be helpful to others that are reading this thread...or may come across it in a future search.

The label on the TCU should give enough info to determine if it's compatible with your BMW. The older generation BMWs (like the e39/e38/e53) communicates telephone/bluetooth data over the I-bus. The newer generation BMWs (like the e60/e65/e70) communicates telephone/bluetooth data over the MOST bus...and this info should be visible on the TCU's label.

The two pics below shows a TCU designed for the MOST bus...and the other a TCU designed for the I-Bus:

Great info Qsilver7. This is exactly what I missed yesterday. Thank you

I have been toying with the idea of adding a TCU to my '05 3.0d but given that I'd need a TCU, a microphone, a BT aerial (at least) and other items as yet unknown, the cost could get quite high!

I think I'll just enjoy the peace of a quiet drive without the interruptions from work! :D

Get the parts needed used from a wrecking yard or eBay. A little research and some effort, you should be able to do this at a fraction of new dealer cost. You may need some programming to your vehicle order but again, a lot of information here and on the web to show what you need and how to do it.

I wasn't ever considering the dealer option! :yikes:

As I need to get DIS up and running (I only have INPA and NCS so far) so I can do a unicorn juice change in my transfer case and the TCG adaptation reset, I guess adding a TCU/BT option would be another reason to get this working. I guess the coding can be done in NCE Expert but I don't want to screw with this to much.

I have done a bit of research on the TCU - but this thread has removed some the smoke from the scene!

Originally considered just the older BT unit (non-TCU) but it's even more messing around in a car with nothing installed, due to the need for the phone cradle etc. Seems the TCU might be a bit simpler - just the TCU, BT aerial, microphone and some coding. I think...

If the wiring is there, I cant see how you could spend much more than $200. I got my TCU for $80. BT antenna and mic is all you need and they cant be as much as the TCU. I guess it comes down to the wiring being there already... Do you have the steering wheel buttons for phone?

NZ$200-$300 for a second hand TCU to start with... even shipped here from eBay.

Silence is golden! ;)

Putting that in context though - a car like mines sells for NZ$20,000-$25,000 here... :D

So it isn't so bad. I just need to sort all the mechanical stuff first. Not that I HAVE any real big issues - just sayin'.
