Sounds like you need to get the EWS aligned with your DME or DDE.

Salty wants us to guess...
I'm thinking Upallnight is probably right and the EWS needs to be aligned...:tapping:

Ignition switch assembly

It was the next place i was going to look at
Yet i had to leave the vehicle before i could do so

But this forum and thread has helped the Euro Mechanic pin point the issue

wpoll, you da man!!!!

Picked it ages ago

I agree with wpoll and bcredliner that the ignition switch needs to be investigated.

All sorts of weird electrical problems can occur with a failing switch. Check out this YouTube video for an example of an amazing panoply of issues resulting from a bad ignition switch.

The above shows that replacement of the switch is pretty easy. Another video link is here.

And if you don't want to spend the money on the switch (or if you want to do an "autopsy" on the old switch to look for failure points), be sure to check out this video on refurbishing the old switch.

And if it turns out it is the ignition switch, (with apologies to upallnight) you owe wpoll a pint!

Good luck.

Hey Mate,
Looks like you owe Wpoll a pint.

OMG. I can't believe it was the most obvious fix that did it.

Tell me about it!!!

Happy to buy wpoll a pint
Happy to have him over he and take him to the MotoGP at Philip Island if he wants ;)

This is a good video on the procedure

Warning Light - Stopped Vehicle, will not restart

I love seeing this forum do just this. I bought my '01 with 128k miles with a check engine light on that reset before I took delivery. Turned out to be cam shaft sensor and seeking resolition I found this site which coincidentally led me to a second copy of the E53 for my wife.

Having two didn't reduce the amount of time spent here that is for sure but the forum makes it possible for us to own these cars because without DIY fixing we couldn't.

This is true
And for some of us, we are used more simple vehicles with mechanical switches where fault finding is a lot more straight forward.

Even though the X5 is full of computers and dashboard warnings and huge fault log files.... It is generally a simple component failure.
Yet throws you so many different alarms you don't know where to look!

Great to have a place like this as a sounding board for your findings
Sure narrows it down :)

After all of this, i am still interested see how the Battery Life holds up.
If the parasitic drain has improved or not.
I will post the results.

Run a scan and see if the DDE module appears in the scan. Perhaps the bad ignition switch wasn't providing power to the DDE.
