BMW X5 Mirror shaking

Hi folks,

I have an issue with both side mirrors (not glass mirror). On the bumpy road, both mirrors shake too much. You can feel even with the hand they are very loosely. There is any fix for this issue?

Thanks in advance.

The fix is complete replacement with good quality after-market mirror. I tired to rebuild the old mirrors with ebay repair kits. Needed to buy a bunch of special tools to pull and install the tiny gears on the motors. and took about 5 hours for each mirror, in the end nothing even improved. there is a lot of special springs under compression and i lost parts that flew out and couldn't find.
I was able to re-use the painted plastic covers from my old mirrors.

This was the best aftermarket mirror with the most options, closest to OEM. Updated gearing design so won't get the same problem like ours. The gear sets in the BMW E53 mirrors are actually shared with a number of other manufacturer's like chrysler, landrover , etc and all wear out with the same problems.

Sometimes you simply need to tighten the three screws under the lower circular cover... And once my drivers mirror was very loose after manually folding it. A power-fold cycle locked it back in place.

Is it possible for the screws to be too tight? I have been noticing that on one side one mirror opens and closes normally, but the other one seems a bit slower and sometimes seems to struggle. Or would this be a motor/gears issue? I feel like when I loosen them a bit, the whole mirror becomes too loose.

That's how it was for me. The procedure is discussed on here somewhere. But for me it involved removing a cover on the bottom of the mirror assembly. Not knowing exactly where the snaps were, I snapped one off (leading to an extra side repair for that), so hopefully you can avoid that. After that was done, it was a simple matter of tightening the Torx screws that were now easily accessible. I have not revisited that issue in 5 years now. Completely solved.

Your slowness is completely different and yes is a gear/motor issue.
Easy to replace but time consuming.

That’s what I expected. Do you know where I can find instructions for it? Or any specific tips on what to look out for?

Hi. I don`t have folding mirror option. They are simple mirror. So tight the bolts under the mirror can fix this issue?

Quite possibly. Pop off the circular cover on the under-side and tighten the three torx screws.... :dunno:
