Pulling front axles can be a real PITA, but since you are out of the rust belt, maybe you will get lucky. the splines in the hub are tapered (I think) and regardless its a real tight fit getting them out and back in? I made special tooling for both removal and installing.

People rebuild axles, buy Cardone or other rebuilds from rockauto, etc. I have bought my last two X5 driveshafts from CVJ Axles in Denver...and have been happy with them

The egs module will still "show" when swapping one. It has to show to be able to access it for programming. Right now the module is "not found". I'm not sure if that's part of the failsafe mode or that is what causes the failsafe mode.

Yeah, cv joints suck. But I've done enough of them.

"Module not found" can for sure be a transmission connector problem. I don't remember exactly where the connector is but that is exactly the problem and the fix when I first bought my X5.

My connector looks good from the outside and the pins look OK too. I'll just keep digging till I'm completely tired of digging. :fishing:

Check for L values when shifting or maybe you can't even read egs? When one pin doesn't make contact in the OBD port you can lose module connection but usually it's the other than DME/EGS affected.

I suspect the connection in the ebox or internals of the TCM/EGS. I took mine apart to check the traces. I did the same with DME when I was tracking down similar.

My case turned out to the connector at the back of the transmission but looks like you already opened yours up to check.

That connector goes inisde to a harness that can and will fail. That said you'll get into the module to get erroneous readings not just get no connection

Solved the transmission problem. I now have a fully functional tranny!

But I'm not saying what it was. Need to continue the trend of not following through with the solutions for that issue.

That's good news for you and your wife since she was sure you would fix it.

Sure is. I just made a post of what the issue was as well.
