I just ordered a set from bimmian with a discount code on top of the sale price! Now we'll see whether I'm in the ring adept or ring inept category.

Does removing the cluster to install the rings causes the tamper dot to appear? Does this void warranty?

The tamper dot appears if the speedometer is tampered with.

There is a sticker that says the warranty would be void if the seal is broken on the cluster. It looks like you are out of your warranty period or soon will be.

does the same go for the CPO warranty? bc if nothing related to the speedometer is covered under CPO (don't know if anything is or not) then would there be any effct?

The only problem I've heard about someone with their speedometer is it missing pixels. I don't think BMW covers that anyways; only if you really really bug them about it.

It's funny that so many mods that I was putting off for fear of losing warranty are actually no/little loss at all (also CPO, thru '08). Good news/bad news I suppose, but being mod-happy, I take it as good news :D

Ok, is removing the cluster and taking it apart constitute tampering with the speedometer? I would have to unplug wires to bring the cluster inside and work on it, does unplugging any wires considered tampering with the spedometer? Last Q to be clear, if I install the rings using the procedure on the site here and not touch anything else, will that cause the tamper dot to appear? Your help is appreciated.

I have done 4 installs, all on different X5's and never once has there been a tamper dot.

If you're careful and gently peel off the sticker on the back of the cluster, you can put it back on and it'll look like it was never opened.

uaaaaah JV, you're da'man. I've been debating this mod for a while but was afraid of the tamper dot. It wasn't worth the tradeoff. In this case JV, I'll definately look into this asap. I have a Q:
I've seen several rings on ebay, some are shiny chrome and other are have the dull titanium finish. Which one does the 4.6 and 4.8 come with? any other pointers I should consider before getting a set? Thx for the feedback guys.

JV 03-04-2006 10:36 PM

I've only seen pics here on X5 World, but it looks like the rings on the 4.8 are titanium/aluminum. Joll has great pics of his aluminum rings that he installed on his X5 in his gallery here

If you run into trouble during your install, just holler! Lots of us have done those rings now, many people around to help.
