Let the mods begin!! Wow! The X5 can be one expensive SUV to mod
I have decided to mod my X5. I have researched this forum quite extensively and finally came to all my conclusions except for wheels which I am hoping you guys can help me with. My car is a bone dry stock 4.4 white X5 "non sport" model with Navigation"
Here is what I have ordered thus far: 1. M5 steering wheel. Still have to get a price on a airbag. The part number for the airbag I need is 32306757891 2. 4.6 Body kit (front and rear aprons and 2 rear side panels) I decided not to get the rear fender flares cause the aluminum running boards have the rear fender flares included in them which is marginally bigger than stock. 3. Aluminum running boards 4. Bike Hitch carrier (for my mountain bikes) 5. Rear clear brake signal 6. Clear taillights and side markers 7. Titanium kit (kidney grille, mirror and rear tailgate) 8. ACS pedal set with brake handle 9. Exhaust tips (4tips or oval exhaust tips on 4.6) The ovals are going to be difficult to retrofit. Anybody know of a good muffler shop in New Jersey that has done this? Am I forgetting any obvious mods here? I know the angel eyes will come after my bank account replenishes itself after the beating I will take with my initial mods. :wow: Okay now for my wheel dilemma: Option1: Since I have decided to go with the 4.6 kit I think I want to stay with the 20's. I was seriously giving a lot of thought to the 19 cause of better ride quality and the fact that they are OEM. One option was to get the 19's and use HRE spacers in the rear to get a better flush look. "Keep in mind I now will have running boards as well, which will dwarf the look of my rear" Option2: Get replica 20's star spoke 87. About a $1000 shipped on eBay from truckaccessoryoutlet. Than put on Toyo's on them for $826 mounted and balanced by my local tire shop. Total price: w/toyos $1826 w/Diamaris $2332 Option3: Get OEM 20's as a complete tire package or rims only. Tire package only comes with Diamaris so total price $3600 mounted and balanced Buy OEM rims only for $2380 plus toyos for total of $3206 I can get the OEM style 4.8 rims for $2628 plus toyos for $3454 Diamaris increase the price about $400 bucks. OH!! :dunno: what should a new X5 owner to do :dunno: I am leaning more towards the replica way but I keep thinking about the extra 5lbs/wheel for a total 20lbs extra and its killing me. On the flip side, since they are heavier, I think they can take more abuse especially on the streets of Manhattan which I occasionally plan to be. Has anyone noticed sluggish starts off the line going to 20's. I fully expect more road feel, but the feeling of dragging an anchor behind when accelerating is not acceptable. |
Nice, can't wait to see it, and about the extra 5lbs a wheel, you honestly won't feel it. You're driving an Sav, it's not a racecar, or a car, so it doesn't matter.
Good luck with everything, and happy modding. :) |
I concur, the X5 is about the most expensive BMW by far to mod but probably the most sastifying.
So far it's  to your mod list. I would suggest you go with replica and save at least a grand or so towards other mod. Many here have replicas without any problem. The extra 20 lbs is negligible on a 5000lbs SAV. Let see some pics once everything is done. |

I covet the 4.6 front bumper too, good luck with this fine list! Modifying your X5 also means lots of $$ spent on tools, unless you've already got a Snap-On truck visiting your garage. It's all worth it though!

I already had the modding disease from when I first purchased my 1995 prelude SI VTECH. I was still in college and I thought $150 for a complete intake was expensive.
As time have evolved as did my taste for more expensive things. My Lexus GS400 was very expensive to mod and is about on par with the BMW mods when comparing prices. Oh well....but as the phrase goes: "IF YOU WANT TO PLAY YOU HAVE TO PAY" |
That's a pretty long list. But some very good choices. I especially like the 4.8is rims. Those are what I am using right now and am really having a hard time considering other rims to buy...just b/c the current ones are so nice.

man.. glad i don't have an x5 anymore.. my mod direction would go the extreme opposite and cost about 3 times more... gawd i have a disease... shoot me

Out of curiosity, where are you able to get the OEM Style 87 rims for $2380? Up here in Vancouver they are over $4300 CAD plus tax...so about $5000. May be worth my while to get some shipped from the good old USA.
Nice mod list by the way... |
