It is usually about 5 or 6 points.

Using lower quality fuel will not result in pinging on the BMW engines as long as the DME can modify timing sufficiently. Taking it to extremes is obviously not recommended. I have never heard pinging on my 3 vehicles on my local 87 or 89, but performance and mileage both suffer on 87 due to the timing being retarded. I have absolutely no performance or fuel consumption degradation on 89, but that is my local 89. Fuel quality will vary widely with geography, which is why BMW specifies 91, to cover the areas that are on the low side. In other areas of North America 89 may definitely cause a performance degradation.

the x5 only take premium which is 91 or higher.(any lower then that will make your engine nocking and shacking.

True that BMW recommend premium 91. The rest of your post is not true. See my post above. Knocking and shaking would be a consequence if the X5 did not have knock sensors and a digital engine management system.

Knocking and shaking are far more likely to be caused by water in the fuel.

Nothing less than 93 and sometimes I will throw in a few gallons of Sunoco 100 (but at $8/gallon I cannot justify filling her up with it).

Any significant difference?

some say its like the difference between Grey Goose and Popov in a mixed drink but my 4.6 runs like a raped ape when I throw a little 100 oct. in the mix.

I would think at some point if you have too much Octane you would actually have less power, like if you tried a full tank of 100 I can't imagine you would gain anything though I suppose the computer would advance the timing to a certain point.

One thing they used to do up here is, besides the higher Octane, some of the companies would try to upsell their Premium based on it simply being a better gasoline, haven't noticed that as much this year maybe because the gas price is higher than normal but it was a popular pitch in the winter in particular.
