"where did you get the 6.1 number from (I'm not being hostile, just curious who got it)"

BMW X5 4.6is vs. Mercedes-Benz ML55 AMG

Do you value sport or utility?

"The result is strong acceleration from rest, cracking off 0-60-mph runs in 6.20 sec."

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...des_benz_ml55/

The 6.1 second number I mentioned in a previous post came from a thread I had seen on here a while back. In my search I did encounter a number of articles where they stated the 0 - 60 as 6.5 seconds.

I need to get out there tomorrow and see what kind of time I can do myself!!!!

15K spent on a 4.6 will make it a much better deal than a 4.8 with 0k spent.

4.8 vs 4.6

I've owned both, hands down the 4.8is is much better. There are a number of key differences.
1. Exterior refresh
2. Panoramic Sunroof
3. Rim design
4.Power close of the rear hatch, my 4.6 rattled until a TSB addressed the issue.
5. X drive which makes the SAV much more agile in the turns, I can even get my rear tires to drift out when pushed.
6. Much throatier sound
7. Dramatically better gas mileage (double Vanos)
8. Adjustable height suspension (you can get your dealer to set it to a lower level which helps lower center of gravity and handling)
9. Less harshness in the suspension, just ever so slightly smoother.
10. 4.8is finally got a transmission reprogramming that dramatically improved throttle response and shifting, 4.6 did not have this issue.
11. Both were quick and responded a little differently, but have to say the 4.8is is quicker. I time my 0-60 which did get there in 6 seconds but with premium fuel with a touch of race gas and cool morning air.
12. Had both on the track at a DE event, the 4.8is definately carves better, much less understeer. Be careful thou, as good as the brakes are they can only do so much on the track, trust me on that one.

IMHO, the 4.8is is the best SAV/SUV that I have ever owned. But both are great vehicles. You should be able to get an '02-'03 4.6is in the mid to low 30's with normal miles and an '04 4.8is in the mid to upper 40's.

Any thoughts? Is it worth the swap?

You must be joking to buy at this price! I got 2004 X5 4.8is with 19K miles for $48K.

Rim Design?

Rim design on the 4.8 is better then the 4.6.........you gotta be kidding. The wheels on the 4.6 kick ass over there 4.8 counterparts

4.6 vs 4.8

To each his own.

SilverBullet 03-14-2007 12:58 PM

As long as you get a BMW.

I never said I committed to purchasing the 4.6 at the $44K asking price. I have not even test driven the vehicle yet.

Wholesale number on that vehicle at that mileage is $40K

This X5 has been parked in a climate controlled garage since new. It has been my daily driver since new. Other than a few rock chips on the front, this X5 is virtually indistiguishable from brand new. It has been dealer maintained at all times and is in flawless condition. You will not find an X5 kept in better condition. There are only a few in the country in this color combination and no other that I know of with fully painted trim in Imola Red.
This is an X5 lovers dream vehicle and I am not happy to let it go. The only reason it is going is because I do not need two SUV's. Title in hand and ready to go.
I have attached a link to the pics because for some reason it says "Invalid URL" when I try to upload.

The pics loaded last to first so go to the bottom of the page for the pics taken yesterday 3/10/07.
