'Check Brake Linings' WTF????

I'm getting this error on the OBC. I take it the brake pad sensors are kicking in? The car has only done 17K miles is this normal? Surely I should get more mileage out of a set of brake pads?

It all depends on how hard you drive your brakes.

Well, I thought - Not hard. But I guess I am wrong? The car is an auto so it's quite heavy on the brakes.

I'm interested to hear what others are getting out of a set of pads though.

Cheers,

Dave.

Yup, need new pads unless there is a problem with your sensor.
City Vs. Highway, and driving style as you know are the variables.
I changed mine after 22K.

Can't say about the pads. My rotors warped at 18,000 mi and replaced...

I take it rotors are the brake disks? I didn't purchase the full maintenance package. Wish I had now! The one I purchased covers all services but not brakes, clutch etc

Car is booked in on Wednesday. Whilst I'm there, I'll get a quote for the new X5 - just spent 20 mintes on the BMW website - the options look great - head up display, rear DVD system, active seats . . . . I kind of like it.

Could also be that you rest your other foot on the brake pedal. Are you a two footed driver?

Dave, there was a long thread here awhile ago, where many of us
chimed in on how long our pads/rotors lasted...
unfortunately, the "search?" tab here is the antithesis of Google, imo.
 ...

Maybe someone can dig it out...

from memory, the mileages were all over the map, due to terrain,
traffic, driving style, etc..

In my case, our '01 had it's front pads & rotors R&R'd at 48K miles.
The rear pads & rotors are the originals; we have 58K miles on
those. Driving is about 90%+ high speed highway, and we have a
5 spd manual, but I don't think that has a great effect.
Cheers!

I currently have 73K miles on my original brake pads and counting.
