I've been doing the "seperate keys" thing for a while... but after getting locked out of my house too many times when the garage door hasn't worked caused me to start carrying a house key too... Everything else i keep on a lanyard in my console.

Use valet key as the primary key
 
Heavy keys will always cause damage.

I know what alot of people will say about this but I'll say it any way.
I keep all my keys on carabeaner on belt loop and use the BMW key to lock and unlock the X5 then the valet key is left in center console and used as the primary key. About once a month I use the regular key to keep key battery charged.

Sounds like you're saying that you leave a key IN the car!??
