Heavy Keys?

I picked my brother up at the airport yesterday. He has been in the car business 40 years. One of the franchises he oversees is BMW.

He got in the car, looked at my steering column, and said,"What the heck is that?"..."That will wreck your ignition switch"

Referring to my robust key ring with various adornments.

Said they were sensitive, don't like the extra weight and expensive to fix.

Any thoughts?

The only key on my BMW key ring, is the BMW key. All other keys are on a separate ring. I used to have all on one and had a problem with the ignition in my Jeep which they related to the excess weight pulling down on the ignition.

Yes, my local BMW shop told me the same.

this is very true, a heavy set of keys hanging off your ignition barrel will wreck it. You should only have your ignition key, house key and key fob at max

i personally use a small carabiner type keychain that I made out of a home depot hook for like a dollar. I have all my keys on it and just take off the car key whenever I drive.

do you have the crystal dice or dolphin on there and a couple of grocery store mini cards? one of the x5 metal and leather key chain? they add up about 1 lbs, j/k.

Alright people let's post pics of our key rings

On a more serious note though, my mom has been telling me this very same thing for YEARS! I never believed her but she also was known to say other zingers like "driving with the windows open will give you an ear infection" "Having less than a 1/4 tank of gas in the car is bad for the engine"and many more.

Guess she was right on this one though :D

I had issues with one of my early BMWs back in 89, since then I always keep a key ring which I detach the car key and keep my other keys in pocket or center console while driving
