normal RPM at IDLE and at DRIVE!!!

i have a 05 X5 4.4 53k miles. i am curious to find out what is the normal RPM at iddle and at drive. my car starts at 1000rpm then drops to 750 rpm at iddle once at drive is just a little above 500 rpm. also sometimes i fell the engine surging alittle. is this normal or what could be the problem?thanks in advance for the info...

i think it is normal to idle that low. Does the surge happen when the rpm is falling from 1000 to 500?

I don't think that is normal. I haven't had that happen to me before but I sometimes have seen the x5 surge while it is dropping from 1000 to 600 rpm.

Mine doesn't surge at all. I have 33K on my 05 4.4. (weird things when cold though)

I am also noticing a surging mostly when I am stopped at a stoplight. It is a constant surging and I don't think it is normal because this wasn't happening when I got the vehicle a year ago. I thought it might have something to do with the cold weather we are having but it did not do this last year. I have looked and when it is doing this there is no significant RPM changes showing. I plan on going in for service sometime in the next couple of months and will have them check this out.

THANKS BABYSVT, LET ME KNOW THE OUTCOME.

02 3.0, 78K, no surge at all, 2400 RPM @ 70 MPH, 700 RPM @ idle

Did you ever find out what this surging was? I have surging only at start up and while cold. Seems to go away once the engine is warmed up.

Anybody think the surging could be due to a misfiring coil? Would a bad coil cause a check engine light?

My surge is VERY minor and only happens when I do a cold start.
