well beyond that at this point.

I searched but I haven't found anyone else who has come across
this. So far the dealer quoted me some astronomical price
for the repair. We'll see tomorrow what the INDY says.

This little valve is suppose to stop engine oil from
draining from your engine to the oil pan overnight.
The driver has no way of knowing this has occurred
because the vehicle does not exhibit and drivability complaints.

The price for the OilPump Is $600.00. Oil, labor? No clue.
And I don't suppose BMWNA would consider some good will
but I'm thinking about calling.:dunno:

Good Luck, QwkAg...it's gonna take some serious selling to get
your local dlr to cover all/most of that day+ worth of labor.

If it happened to mine, I would keep driving it like it is, until
I heard different noises. Then, I would add some old Harley
Special 70W oil and tip toe to the dlr for a trade. :D

Interesting:
the Indy called back and said he can't
find labor rates either. I know he has
the same access as you do so I wonder
where the dealer got his price?

Looks like this is going to be a call
to BMWNA for sure.

Either it is being removed from dealerspeed and added to the ISTA server, or it is just down right now and will be up later. I am kinda out of the loop at wirk since I've been out with the spinal injury.

That really just says replace the oil pump according to Repair Instruction
RA 11 41 000. Any chance you can get a copy of that instruction?

Thanks

Barry:

I could see it taking 14 hours. Someone who has done it several times could likely beat that, but your indy, doing it for the first time, having to lift/support the engine, and having to take the front axle pieces out to get to the oil pan, would likely take all of that time.

My comments to Rick last year, when his X5 had the same issue were:

One indicator would be if you hear any tapping noises on cold startup. If so, that would increase my sense of needing to do it sooner. Absent any noises, it is pretty much a judgement call. Yes, I would expect it to impact engine life over the long term. Whether it accelerates wear to the point that you notice accelerated engine wear before the rest of the vehicle wears out is the real question.

I have the same thoughts now. I would do it on my own vehicle, but then I wouldn't be paying retail labour, probably just a portion of that for access to the shop and hoist. If you hear no additional noise on engine startup, particularly after the vehicle has sat for a period of days, then it is really a coin toss as to whether you need to do it. If you do hear any additional noise, I would do it right away.

It is well worth asking BMW if they are prepared to contribute to the cost of this repair in either case. It is obviously something that they know about. They expect that it will happen during the warranty period, which you are outside of. You should ask whoever has been changing the oil whether this necessarily happened just prior to this oil change, or whether it could have happened some time ago (in which case you are SOL). I suspect that it just happened. The phrasing I would use is that you are a loyal BMW customer, you are a great supporter of BMW products, you realize that you are out of warranty but you are asking them to contribute as an investment in keeping you such a strong BMW supporter. While you don't necessarily expect them to pay for the entire job, given that it is out of warranty, you haven't received the value you expect from your vehicle, and you want to remain a BMW supporter. Something like that. Those are the propositions that work much better that the demands involving lawyers. The legal position is clear, if the warranty is up. Giving them a clear indication of what you are looking for, and that you appreciate their consideration, is much more likely to work. I think you have a good shot at getting them to contribute. It may be for 50%, but that beats no contribution.

Let me know how it goes, and feel free to PM me back.

Jeff

If I recall correctly, the hours estimate came right from the shop foreman at my BMW dealer. I also got a second opinion at my Indy and the hours were estimated to be somewhere around the same. So I didn't pull them out of the air.

Update: Just checked my service file . . . 13.7 hours is exactly what the dealer labor hour estimate was.

I don't have the TIS running on this computer to check the procedure specifically for the N62, but here it is for the M60 if you are curious.

I also agree with your suggested approach. I would definitely say that you know the warranty is up, but the fact that there is an SIB on the problem and that this certainly isn't a normal wear and tear issue, would they be so kind as to extend some sort of discount on the repair, maybe half even?

Jeff

Somewhat to this point, I wonder how many times this failure is not diagnosed or apparent. Maybe in some cases the parts stay partially lodged. I've only collected part #4 so far, but maybe the previous owner 'found' the other parts.

I certainly didn't miss a part clanging into the drip pan (never such an event in 15 years of changing oil on vehicles!) but I suppose it could either go unnoticed or whoever is servicing the car just shrugs and tosses the part. As a side note and at the moment it happened, I really, really, really wanted to think it was some special part of oil filter that I had never seen before.

All this discussion has me interested again. Might have to consider changing the oil to see if there's any more treasure in there . . . .

Jeff

After having giving it further thought and talking it over with the indie
I agree with your post.

Regarding your suggestions; Wouldn't you know it great minds think alike.
I Contacted BMNA this afternoon and spoke to a very nice man who listened
very carefully to my concerns and gave me a case number. He
contacted the dealership and left a message for the service manager.
He made no promises but assured me that he would do what he could.

Just about everything you suggested I said along with a few other kind expressions
including my recent thoughts about purchasing a 330D, fixed income senior, ect. ect
I didn't talk about money. All I ask for was customer support
and the way may daughter put's it I'm looking for some BMW Love.
I got an SIB in my hand

We'll see what happens.

Thanks for the info everyone......
