Non-Return Valve parts found in engine oil filter during engine oil service (Update)

Well this is cute. Repairing this is going to be interesting.
SI B 11 09 05 calls to repair this under warranty but we are
well beyond that at this point.

I searched but I haven't found anyone else who has come across
this. So far the dealer quoted me some astronomical price
for the repair. We'll see tomorrow what the INDY says.

This little valve is suppose to stop engine oil from
draining from your engine to the oil pan overnight.
The driver has no way of knowing this has occurred
because the vehicle does not exhibit and drivability complaints.

The price for the OilPump Is $600.00. Oil, labor? No clue.
And I don't suppose BMWNA would consider some good will
but I'm thinking about calling.:dunno:

Definately worth trying for the goodwill, maybe they will cover parts and you just pay labor since that is the normal result it seems. Though that might still be more than the indy price. I'd get the indy price first before trying to get goodwilled so you can know at that time the better deal.

Exactly what I intend to do tomorrow. Funny how I was going in
next week to do the overhaul thing on minor issues if there were any.
Dealer says T-rod bushing and rear 3.8mm brakes are of concern also.
I just had the front end checked about 6 months ago but we'll see.

All I did was go in and buy the 2009 Navi disc and Version 32 OS.
They had a $79.00 oil change special. (Sure why not)
Guess that's about the most expensive oil change I ever got......

QwkAg:
Wow! :wow:
Hope they goodwill all/most of it...

While that situ comes up in older Harleys regularly, it's a relatively easy repair;
in 45 years of driving cars, I have never run into that problem. The Teuton
geniuses musta missed that during their all world new model testing.

Yes, this is a real clever one. I'm impressed at the way the X5 can serve up really expensive repairs that I never would have imagined. The thimble looking part fell out when I removed the oil filter. I made the part into a necklace for my daughter and put the $2K the dealer estimated for the repair in her college fund instead. I'm convinced the rest of the vehicle will fail before the engine does anyway. If you do an internet search on the SIB number, you can find some E60 owners who have had the parts appear during their oil changes.

As a note on goodwill - I didn't push for this as I bought it from an auto broker instead of my dealer.

Post #5 in that thread says this job comprises
14 hours of labor Is that true ?...:dunno:

Weasel 03-04-2010 01:36 PM

That's likely close to the retail hours charged through the shop. It could take less time with the proper tools, equipment and knowledge/experience. But can take much longer as a first go at it, especially with basic tools and working on a driveway type situation.

Quicksilver 03-04-2010 01:46 PM

I have no intention of doing it myself. I have a great factory trained
Indy. I'm trying to understand and educate myself as to
what's involved in removing and replacing the oil pan and the
oil pump that would take 14 hours?

Weasel 03-04-2010 01:57 PM

I just logged into the BMW website to look up the labor times, they seem to have removed the section for labor times lookup from the menu... Either it is being removed from dealerspeed and added to the ISTA server, or it is just down right now and will be up later. I am kinda out of the loop at wirk since I've been out with the spinal injury.

Quicksilver 03-04-2010 02:13 PM

Sorry to hear about the injury
Get well soon.....
