Do you mean welding tips to the end of the muffler or the downward pipes?
With regards to the choice of tips,its very much of personal taste.
I used to prefer the twin exhausts but I quite like my ovals!

I think its an extention to the downpipe, but when i take it down to the workshop and get some better breif i will keep you posted!

Sorry!A muffler is a short word for exhaust silencer.

If you thinking of doing an outwards extension to your downpipe,then definitely dont go for the big ovals!!!!!

BACK PRESSURE.You have noticed that the 3.0D exhaust system is straight through from the Turbo,Cat to the rear silencers!At the rear silencers,Bmw have installed a "back pressure" loop,meaning that you have a pipe entering
the silencer and this pipe does a 180 degree turn inside the silencer and comes out on the same side as the pipe entering,and then you see your downpipe.Now if one is to install a silencer that is more straight through ,which has a pipe entering one side and exiting on the other side ,you will loose "back pressure". Your car will feel like you have lost power at lower revs but you may gain at the top end because your exhaust gases will be flowing better.
The 4.8 silencers I fitted on mine do have a pipe entering on one side and then you have the tips on the other side.However,the pipes inside the silencer do a few turns before leading to the end tips,so although the design is different from the 3.0D silencers ,the Back pressure should be similar!
Another thing that effects back pressure is the pipe diametre.This is easiest perhaps to explain back pressure to you!....If you have a narrow garden hosepipe ,when you open your tap ,water flows with more pressure than a larger diametre hose!Its the same with exhaust gases,these flow quicker with a narrower pipe!If you increase the pipe diametre they will loose "back pressure".Here is the reason why I cut as much of the 63mm pipe of the 4.8 and used as much as possible of the 3.0D oem 51mm pipe.
Exhaust diametre is relative to engines size/power.If you increase your horsepower,you should also increase exhaust pipe diametre.Theres a formula for this.

Ok.Now its time for you to have a laugh at my photo editing skills( first time I did this and I am tired now).You asked me,why not on the twin ovals tips from your downpipes,well have a LOOK.................................... :D

Your downpipes are the tubes pointing down!
Where you are want to weld the tips are the end of your silencers/mufflers.(covered up by the plastic covers).

200.00 quid is a bit steep for your normal exhaust place!Does this include the tips?Cheap, if after the job is complete, it looks like it came like that from the factory.I apply this policy a lot here!

Sorry for the delayed response, but I am not always over my computer I kind of follow up as and when. Yes we sell the kits complete for the exhausts, you don't need rubbers as the kit is designed to use the original mountings so you use the existing rubbers. It is a relatively easy DIY install and with the clearance that the car has you don't really need a ramp (although with the cold weather it is not much fun lying on the ground) Your local Kwik fit exhaust centre could be a very handy visit and a few quid to the technician there would be well worth it. Keep your old exhaust and then put it back when you sell it; the sell the sports system as well.
It should not effect emmisions one bit as it is a cat back system and therefore retains the original cats. The system also uses 1 large silencer and two small silencers in the tail pipes. You get a nice sound out of the pipes on boost only really heard from the following car no real extra cabin noise..
