Hole in hose under engine cover HELP!!
3 Attachment(s)
So I took the engine cover off to clean the engine and found a hoel in a hose twords the back of the engine. It is about the size of my finger, I can tell it is sucking air because when I plug it a whistling noise goes away. No check engine light. Anyone have any idea what the hose is for? I have an appt next week to change belts and am wondering if I can wait that long? Thanks guys
Attached are a few pictures for soem reference. |
This is common, the hose with the hole goes to the oil separator, and the hose that connects the valve covers will get worse if not replaced. And there is a third hose that is under the oil separator , this one is about six inches long. You should replace all three. If not replaced they will lean out your fuel mixture, thus gas mileage out the window and generate fault codes "Bank1 and Bank2 too lean"....or MAS fault
For some reason these hoses can`t take the heat and oil, they get all gummy and collaspe or rip apart. They are not expensive, but the short hose, Hummm is a bear to change, the Fire wall must be lifted to get to it. And if you notice a hint of blue smoke at the exhaust, replacing the oil separator would be a good idea. Hope this helps.. |
Thanks, your right the hose is really soft and feels gummy. Is this a do it yourself project or stealership? From the looks of it there is not much space to work back there!!

the two top hoses you can replace in 20 mins...
The one short one a couple of hours. But yes you should be able to replace them yourself.... a little motivation....$1200 dollars at the dealer with the oil separator replacement...I don`t think so.... |
WOW, this must be common! I just fixed mine. I started this thread.
http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...ause-pics.html Then this dude had a simular issue, that I commented in. I did not know about a third hose tho. anyway here is that thread. Both should help you out. Check them out and let me know what you think. http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...rpm-surge.html |

I had a thought. How about I yank this entire system out, and throw it in the woods!? I will plug up the holes in the intake and let the crankcase breather/vent just vent to atmosphere. Have you heard of this? Do you think too much oil will come out of the breather/vent and make a mess? |
That`s exactly how my hoses looked like when I had this issue...good pics

Who? me? |
It would probably react the same as running the engine without the oil cap, to lean, and your DME computer will work overtime trying to richen the fuel mixture...
On another note ; I recall a service letter on a heater blanket to keep this area hot in cold climates, to avoid moisture buildup in these hoses... |
Thanks, Man those hoses looked terrible. How long did it take to do the top 2 hoses? It sounds like the lower hose might be beyond my capabilities. What did you all take off to get at the lower back of the upper two hoses? It looks pretty tight back there.
