I didn't remember the exact torque number but it was very low so I decided to put some blue loctite on the screws just in case.

I still don't quite understand why you used loctite blue (sorry I am not familiar with it) for torquing purpose. If I am not wrong, loctite blue is a kind of sealant applied on screw threads to prevent it from possible leaking. So loctite blue doesn't really help you torque the screws to 7 ft-lbs. Is this correct?

No, locttite blue is not a sealant. Loctite Blue is a "threadlock" to prevent nuts and bolts from loosening.

So i had a local shop (very BMW savy) replace my tranny fluid and filter figuring i was being pro-active with all new BMW fluids and parts. They said it was a good idea since liftime means 100k and my X5 is at 110,000. Let me note that i had ***ABSOLUTELY NO*** problems/symptoms what so ever. 2 days later and $500 closer to the poor house in less than 50mi. the transmission failed on the HWY & now needs a new tranny or a full rebuild quoted at around $5,000 by the same shop...BMW=Break My Wallet//the Ultimate Fixing Machine

Very sorry to hear. It isn't so much a BMW issue, it is just something than can happen after a transmission fluid change. It is worth checking to make sure the shop used the right fluid. Have they diagnosed the failure yet?

 Good luck with that. If the shop used the correct fluid and fill procedure, which is worth checking, then you won't have much luck with the lawyers, as there are too many well documented cases of transmission fluid changes causing failures. The shop can get an expert witness from any transmission shop. I don't think your one example of your transmission still running is going to swing the case....

I would have NEVER recommended changing 100% of the fluid over 100k miles, that was poor judgment of the shop. To be honest, I wouldn't recommend changing any of the fluid past 100k miles. If you're going to ever change the tranny fluid, I would recommend changing it early and frequently and only about 50% each time.
