2003 X5 3.0 5 Speed
1 Attachment(s)
Bought my X5 new in 2003, I have taken great care of it - just hit 320k - original clutch and motor! Picked it up in Spartanburg, North Carolina and drove it home to Connecticut. Wish BMW still made it in 5 speed.

So glad to see this! |
Hey Guys!
Have had my 2006 3.0 6MT (Stratus Gray) for just over a year, and just completed a bit of a facelift on it. Also, just rolled over 123,000 miles  https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2823/3...ff84958c_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2861/3...25d1ab6d_b.jpg https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3735/3...ed2563bd_b.jpg |

After putting the style 300 wheel on though, I'm getting some sort of whining noise coming from the transmission tunnel. Almost like the sound of a wheel bearing going bad, but a little deeper, and its mostly heard when the car is in gear and decelerating off throttle. I'm confused and concerned at the same time :confused::confused: |
Quote:
That's interesting, mine is dong the same thing after changing the wheels. A little different though bc it only is whining under slight throttle, enough to keep me going but not accelerating/decelerating. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Received my Kalahari Beige/Black 2004 6MT 2 weeks ago, shipped here to CT from Las Vegas. 175k miles, but exceptionally nice condition, with a thorough maintenance history. I found it here on the forum through a post by the P.O. I contacted him and we had several conversations, leading to a PPI by an independent shop that verified its condition. In many ways nicer than I had expected, looking forward to enjoying it!

Love the color ChiefRider welcome to the club!

Glad to see everything worked out with the new ride. Welcome to the family!

New member here. I own a 2003 X5 manual, originally from NJ. After glancing through this thread I recognized the X as having been owned by member Jarbackwards. It has just under 200K miles on it now. It looks like it has been here in MN for about three years. I have owned it for about two months, it is in the shop right now getting rear brake lines. Ricky Bobby, I know that you are in NJ, do you still have any contact with Jarbackwards? I would like to get some vehicle history if I could. I am also getting the CDV taken out while the brakes lines are being done. I have learned a lot reading through the thread. This is my first gas vehicle in years, I usually drive diesel vehicles, I still have two VW diesels.
Thanks Les Darsow Burnsville, MN |
Welcome Les, from the next-newest member!
I have had a love-hate relationship with diesels, my last being an MB 350SD. They have their charm, but I'll stick with petrol! And thanks for the welcome from the others on the board. I'm liking my 6MT! |

Hey there! New member and wanted to introduce myself and say hey. Bought this Black Sapphire Metallic 2002 the other day off the Bay and it is in route to my home in TX!

Very nice. Looks great with the black grills!

Well sold off a few of my collection and came across a HOLY GRAIL 2006 6 Speed Black Saphire on Truffle Brown and couldn't pass it up. I would figure that this car was someone on here's at some point. Carfax shows it has lived in Illinois and Ohio its whole life. 133k miles and has a complete 4.8is Body Kit, 4.8is Wheels, 4.8is Exhaust, and Silver Gauge Rings, Comfort Seats, Heated Steering Wheel, Heated Front and Rear Seats, Pano, Factory Tow Hitch and Rear Sunshades. I'll post more pictures once it arrives. The rear taillights will be sold as I only prefer the factory style.

WTB E53 5 or 6 spd
New member here. I am currently looking for an E53 in 5 or 6 speed manual. Winter package (heated seats) is a must. Preferably post 2001 (so that it has the updated X drive system).
Let me know if anyone is interested in selling one. I am in Wi but willing to travel to MN, IL, IA, MI etc |

Oh my word!
This is such an awesome example, but sadly far out of my budget. I should have mentioned it earlier, my lowly budget is not more than $5000, perhaps $6000. I understand that won't be enough to buy the best ones out there, but hopefully I can still fine a decent example. I am not averse to the idea of taking care of the most common issues myself, so if some one has one that isn't in the best shape mechanically, I would still be interested |

Hey everyone, I'm the owner of a 2004 6mt. Have been driving the car for a while now, and these really are great cars. It's a shame you can't get a proper gearbox in any newer cars.

To ClassyJalopy. Early 4WD system is easier to maintain and works well in winter (trust me, I grew up in WI but live in the Alps). Don't limit yourself, consider pre-facelift cars.
|
- I personally think 2004-2006 models are better, no FRONT driveshaft issue. And it has 6spMT, which gives you better fuel mileage on hwy.
- Go to autotrader dot com. Enter X5, years. - Right now, there is a 2005 X5 6spMT with 98K in Waterloo IA. - Just keep looking, you will find what you want later. |
Thanks guys, I will check out the Iowa one
|
That IA one is listed as a MT on autotrader, but the pics on the dealer site show auto. Typical autotrader.

Yes that appears to.be a dud, unfortunately

I just found out some production data for manual E53s:
pre-LCI 3,219 US 128 Canada LCI 1,079 US 20 Canada |
^Low numbers for sure, especially in your Great White North. Looks like you will have to import one if you really want one. I wouldn't mind having a 6spd X5 even though it has the straight six. I bet it's a hoot to ring the neck out of the M54. :)

^For sure fellas. Wasn't thinking true performance wise. Just "fun" wise. My ultimate "fun" X5 would be a rear wheel drive N62b48 powered variant.

All good points regarding how m54b30 lacks grunt in X5. But at least they aren't as much of a maintenance whore as their v8 counterparts.
I had an auto 3.0 x5 for a while and while it was never underpowered, it was definitely underwhelming. Now that I have been daily driving my 525i touring 5 speed for a year , I can appreciate that little extra grunt you can wring out from the engine. |
I never introduced my manual beauty.

Well the time has come for the Truck to see the Doc. She went in today for some surgery. LoL. Here is a list of new parts she is getting installed, UUC Lightweight Flywheel 8.6 lbs., UUC E34 M5 Kevlar Clutch, UUC Short Shifter, UUC DSSR, UUC Steel Braided Clutch Line, CDV Delete, H&R Springs, Bilstein Struts, FR CV Boot, and Valve Cover Gasket.
She has been very good to me, and now at 93000 miles, plus 10 lbs of boost, it’s time to be good back. |
10lbs of boost? Do you have a turbo on yours?
|
Quote:
It has a Vortech Supercharger. |
Quote:
|
I went through your posts and see you have an RMS kit. And that the owner did it all for you. Any chance he is still offering those? I hear I can bolt on with a bracket an old C32 supercharger. I am planning on going that route since it is cheap and will get me to about 290hp or so. That should give me 4.4 m62 performance.
|
Quote:
It has not been on the Dyno since it was Supercharged, and at that time it was stage 1 at 6 lbs. boost for tuning. Now, it is stage 2 at 10 lbs. boost with Methanol injection. The Methanol kit is the Aquamist which follows my injectors. It starts at about 2800 rpm at 25% pump flow. Depending on throttle position and engine speed from that point dictates the amount of Methanol the engine will receive. If you watch the X5 V12 at the track, the passenger will say, “it’s nothing spectacular”. That’s at 700 hp. I believe it’s the Trucks weight that is a major factor. However, if you understand the weight of the Truck, then even in my case it’s fast and especially on a public roadway. Basic boosted math is 14 hp. Per 1 lbs. of boost. So take the 230 hp. M54B30, 140 hp. in boost and 30 hp. from the methanol (which is conservative considering most get 40 to 50 hp.) and you get 400 hp. That’s the power output of a E39 M5. So, I am very excited to see how the Truck will perform with the 8.6 lb. flywheel regarding parasitic loss. Also, I have a pre February 2002 (build date: January 2002) which should keep loss minimal compared to later E53’s. |
10lbs with Meth injection?? :wow:Pics or it didn't happen haha.
Do you have a thread on your install/tuning? That thing has to be a decent machine with the manual and that kind of power |
Gains from meth injection vary by application and baseline HP/TQ. It is not plug and play. Without a tune for meth the gains will be minor and could even decrease HP/TQ. Meth cools incoming air and reduces the chance of detonation so with a turbo or supercharger there is more likely to be gain out of the box. Since meth increases the octane, a stock engine ECU may allow increased timing which is in effect somewhat of a tune, increasing likelihood of gain. Regardless of application, to maximize benefit of meth you need some dyno time to determine the right nozzle size and how much meth is injected at X pounds of boost or injector pulse width across the RPM scale.

I decided to do the vanos as well. WoW was I missing out on low end torque.

2002 X5 Manual Sport new to us and first ever BMW
We were looking for a replacement for our 99 V70na with 258K miles, given it to my mother in law as her 2000 Olds with only 118K miles rotted away and was not road worthy. We looked at Volvo xc90, BMW X3 and X5 with Manuals only. We found a 2002 X5 Sport 5 spd Manual in Green exterior, Anthricite headliner and beige interior. It needs a few things but seems to have been well taken care of as it has 197K miles on the clock. Being new to the forum. I am still struggling to find an easy way to post a pictures as none of my pictures have a URL. attached to them. I hope to get many good years as I did with the Volvo. Located in North eastern Pa. Thanks.

We’re still alive!
It’s very rare that I pass judgement, but the other one should be deleted. Sorry if I have offended anyone. |
Ours is gone; traded our 2004 3.0 liter 6SP in on a lower mileage 2003 4.4 automatic. Three different occasions of burned exhaust valves with no resolution and only expensive head or even engine replacements finally drove us into the ground. Couldn't stay away from E53's however, and wound up with this nice dark gray car. We'll see how it does...

Hey Everyone, I'm new here trying to track down a manual transmission E53. If anyone is thinking about selling theirs, or knows of one for sale, please let me know! Really just want something that has been well maintained and has no rust.
I sold my E36 M3 about a year ago and want to drive a BMW again - I think an E53 will fit my needs perfectly. I'm located in Southern California. |

Thanks for sharing, I'll check it out

Anyone nearby interested in selling? |
I am in Connecticut and have been considering selling....

Been lurking here for a few months while I debated my next vehicle choice. I knew I wanted/needed something bigger then the GTI I was leasing for my 2 dogs, and for the "project" house I just moved into. Dreaded getting into a generic SUV (was considering everything from an FX35 to a XC90). Luckily, an old X5 with a stick makes SUV life just a little more interesting! I also knew that I wanted a 3.0 (I used to own an E46 wagon - manual of course) and am used to working on these motors. I know they're pretty stout cars once you figure out all the fiddly things.
There were 2 local to me for sale on FB marketplace, both for easy cash buys. Ended up settling on a 2001 with 145k miles! https://scontent-lga3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...7a&oe=5E57E16F https://scontent-lga3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...b8&oe=5E44D167 Car had been sitting for a while, so ended up replacing the battery. Also needs brake work, a clunk in the front suspension fixed, and some other dash lights taken care of so I can pass inspection. Also minor things like door locks are funky, the single key fob doesn't work, and at least one window regulator replaced. But motor and drivetrain (the important parts) are strong, the body is nearly perfect (seriously, haven't found a dent or scratch yet, and the paint is fade free), and interior will probably be cherry after a minor detail. Of course, winter hit Rochester early so I guess I need to either get my garage serviceable, or hold off until spring to start some of these projects! PS - a quick search on FB marketplace in the NE had a handful of other manual X5's for sale throughout the NE. |
Congratulations!

Good work, wuzilla

Hello All,
I've been debating to sell or not sell my long time friend. I'm the second owner of the 2001 with 160k miles. I've taken care of it since 2008 always garaged kept and in extreme cleaning and shape condition, many upgrades to list. Hard to say good bye to an old friend but priorities have changed, don't have the time to drive it as much as I would like to, so generally it seats in the garage with occasional weekend drives. I have of course the winter and the summer tires set. Check it out, an older picture with the old cross bars, upgraded since! |

For differentials, transfer case and transmissions I only use the original fluid and I change those fluids around every 50,000 miles.
|
On my new to me 2004 X5 at 130,628 miles I replaced the MT gear oil with Red Line 75W-90 MT90 GL-4. I have no way of knowing though I have a feeling the oil was the factory fill. The first to second shift was not real smooth most of the time. Seems to shift better now. After a few thousand miles now I always start in second gear. First is way to low. Nice though if you are going from a stop up a steep hill.
The Blackstone analysis is below. BRAD: Universal averages show typical wear levels for a BMW manual transmission after about 27,900 miles on the oil. We're not sure what's aluminum, but it really shouldn't be the dominant wear metal and certainly shouldn't be this high. Iron is from steel parts and copper shows brass/bronze wear. If this is factory oil the combination of wear-in and a long oil run might explain some of the metal, but we're not sure about all of it. Silicon is probably sealer or oil additive, but could show dirt contamination too. Is it shifting okay? Check back in 10,000-15,000 miles. Aluminium was 192 where the average is 32 Iron was 178 where the average is 53 Copper was 81 where the average is 34 Many of the other categories were below or way below average. I also replaced the drain and fill plugs at that time. Brad |
Very good odds it was the OEM gear box fluid.
|
As part of a major refresh I just did, I just did the transmission detents and replaced the fluid with valvoline MTF (supposedly a suitable mtf lt-1 subsitute).
I had notchiness (or slight grinding if I shifted too fast) going from 1st to 2nd gear that I always thought was a worn synchro. The X5 exhibited this behavior since I got it at 100k miles, but now it absolutely feels like a new transmission! Don't know if was the fluid or the detents, but I'm guessing both as I had the 5th gear 'lean' and sort of had to hunt for the gates a bit. |
Hi all! First post and checking in here to introduce myself. I’m Kurt from northern NJ, and I just picked up a 2001 X5 with a 5 speed manual. Currently black on gray with about 134k miles. Previous owners let it go a little bit, but I’ve already done a basic paint correction, and seal for the winter.
My wife and I are BMW nuts (primarily ///M nuts), this is our 5th BMW in the driveway (6th vehicle, as we have a Denali for a second daily). Just got my 6MT gearbox fluid changed.
Added Redline MTL. I stripped the 8mm hex fill plug. Tip for removal, use some heat, if you have it. |
Quote:
I never had a grind, just a slight notch. Detents was probably the solution, just an oil change did not cure it for me. The DSSR really cleaned up the pattern, it’s extremely tight now. Definitely sped up the shifting. At one point mine got so sloppy, that in gear felt like neutral in most other vehicles. |

How do you replace the detents? I have never heard of this but I also have slight notchiness going from 1st to 2nd as well. I changed the trans fluid when i got the car about 15k miles ago. |
Quote:
https://webspace.ringling.edu/~dplas...hift_pins.html I think it's really the reverse and 5th detents that are important in shifter aligment. The others (the small ones on top of the transmission) were easier to do, so might as well do those, too. The one thing I can add to the guide is that if your shifter leans to the right, that 5th gear detent will probably be tough to get out. i used a 5/16" concrete wedge (lag) anchor wrapped with one layer of duct tape to grab it from the inside. I used a slide hammer on the concrete anchor bolt, but if you use a longer bolt, you can use something else to lever it out if you don't have a slide hammer. |

Love my 5 speed! 3.0 great gas mileage and handles good.

Hey all been a member for a bit here.
I traded in my original 05 4.8iS for a 10 X3 6MT. That car was met with an unfortunate end and thus the search began. Craigslist found me an 04 Toledo Blue/Beige/Sport/CWP/Nav/6MT X5. It's not in the greatest shape but I plan on fixing it up. Fleet consists of: 04 M3 Carbon Black/Cinnamon/6MT Dinan S3 (with many other mods, it's FBO, built head, cams etc) 00 M5 Royal Red/Caramel Extended 00 Z3M Coupe (in the process of a S54 Turbo and 6MT swap) |
Well done though sorry to hear about the F25's untimely demise.
Wishing you many miles of smiles. What work do you have planned? I just had to replace my alternator. Brad |
Hello all,
Adding to the list my 2001 BMW X5 5-speed. Purchased in April with 113k miles and have around 114k now. It is Schwartz on Black leather interior with the cold weather package, and digital climate control. During my ownership, I've been fixing a number of things that have popped up due to the X5 sitting for multiple years in a garage (previous owner had it as a spare car never used). I've done the valve cover gasket, new coils / plugs, and am in the process of having the ABS module rebuilt. I've also purchased the Lemforder front suspension rebuild kit from FCP Euro, but have not yet installed. It's a great truck and a nice compliment to the other old BMWs in the stable (1998 M3 sedan auto, 1994 540i 6-speed, 1990 535i 5-speed, 1989 535i auto). |
Add me to the list. :)
2004 6-speed in South Carolina. Purchased used in April, 2020 from PA for $5,500. VIN: 5UXFA135X4LB09205 Dedicated thread: https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...ilver-suv.html |
Great buy! I laughed a bit because literally all of the issues you described, I have been through and done. I recommend the OEM aux cord kit, p/n 82110149390. It's cheap, and with a bluetooth audio adapter, it's a perfect setup.
Compass mirrors are PnP. I found mine at a pull-a-part from a 2006, and paid $5 for it. MID pixels were a big hit to the wallet. I think I paid $800 for a new unit after getting fed up buying used ones that didn't work. |
This is why I joined this forum. I knew I'd get great nuggets of info like this.
Thank you for the aux part number, and info on the mirror. I'm all about these solutions. :D I'm going to quote your reply in my thread to keep track for my own records. |
FWIW, I bought the aux cord and installed it according to the instructions, but it never worked for me. That was before my PA soft days so it may have just needed coding or something.

I've never been able to get it working either. In my case it's because my Becker CD54 unit doesn't support it (I think) but it could also be because there are several variation on the wiring required, depending on the exact head unit you have... |
I'm one of those guys that has an old fashioned view that a kids first car has to be a manual transmission. Then you'll always know how to drive one and non of your friends will ever take it for a joy ride. Anyway, my daughter for the past couple of years has been claiming she wants a Jeep when she turns 16. Have you looked at Jeep prices? Desperate for alternatives and being a long time BMW guy I started my search for the manual X5. I setup a search on a few apps and over the course of 18 months I would check every couple of weeks. One showed up two hours away and the owner wouldn't answer any questions or send any pics. The next one didn't start, was smoked in and was 3 hours away. I was getting desperate! Then just two weeks ago I ran across a 2001 Silver, 120k miles, black interior, cold weather package, clean carfax, 10 min from home and was posted just 4 hours ago. I cancelled my work meetings, got $3250 asking price cash and headed out to see the car.
It was a shady deal with a guy passing thru town, bought for wife and she didn't want to learn, title in someone else's name, coolant dripping, bad odor inside. All my bells and whistles were going off but it's a manual X5 so I handed him the cash and drove home. It turns out, the car is super solid. The drive home was amazing. My daughter's first words were a disappointed "Ooohh". I said, "This is $6k cheaper than any Jeep, google X5 Off-Road and see what you can buy with that". Exactly 3 min later she was the most excited I've ever seen her about a car. My daughter and I have been spending time together taking the doors apart to replace the window clips, shampooing the carpet (twice), sending the radio out for pixel repair. This weekend we're replacing the entire cooling system. Then pull the headliner and recover and drive the beast. She starts driving in a couple months and we're leaving it stock until she gets comfortable. Then the plan is to add a 2" lift, new wheels and all terrain tires, roof tent, and maybe off-road bumpers if we can find them at a reasonable price. |
Welcome!
Well done. If you haven't familiarized yourself already with FCPeuro.com now is the time. Don't forget the cooling system expansion tank. Have fun! Brad |

Hey Robert, Loved your post about manuals! I did the same thing to my daughter, she also wanted a Jeep, but ended up with a 5spd VW Sportwagen! She “cussed” me at first but as soon as we spent some time detailing it and getting it where she wanted it - she now loves it and wouldn’t look back! With regard to the off-road bumpers, roof rack, etc..., I don’t know that I’d call them “reasonable” but they aren’t catastrophically priced either, check out FMU, they make just about everything off-road for the X5 E53 chassis and it’s all bolt on. I don’t remember exactly but their kit makes room for I believe a 33” tire - may be 35” but I don’t think so. You can also check out the “overland” thread on here, guy just put one together for off-roading [emoji106] Sent from my iPhone using Xoutpost.com |

New X5 owner

I just recently bought a 2002 X5 3.0i with the 5-speed manual. I'd always wanted a 1970's BMW 2002 but never got one. As I was looking for another vehicle a couple months ago, I learned that the E53 came with a manual after seeing one on Cars & Bids. I've loved the E39 540i as well, so seeing the E53 with a manual was a compelling choice and I was lucky enough to find one in good shape. I've already been to the salvage yard picking up parts to refresh some of the worn items and made my first orders from FCP Euro. I was even luck enough to buy a set of style 214 wheels from an E70 that will go on it as soon as some other other mechanical work is done.
|
Welcome!
Welcome! That's a great find. Mine (an 06) has been trouble free and a lot of fun. You'll find it is truly 'tossable' on back roads, it's like a well mannered and reserved version of my M3. It's all about the driver. Enjoy!

you will probably need hub centric rings for those 214 wheels
I put 214's on my 2006 and needed 74.1 to 72.56mm hub centric rings |

It has the same basic engine as my '95 M3 yet it doesn't suffer from the same shortcomings (cooling system hoses and radiator, overflow, temps, etc). It's a great SAV!! |
I missed out on a white 6 speed a year and a half ago and have been kicking myself since. Although because I missed out on it I ended up with my 4.6 so I can't be too sad. My dream is to find a nice 6 speed and hold on to it until my son is old enough to drive so he can have a sweet 1st car and know how to drive a car with 3 pedals.

Came across one in Portland OR while wasting time. If anyone is close by and has any interest. https://www.82ndautomall.com/invento...-4dr-AWD-3.0L/

$7000 for pre lci 5spd... Man I'm out of touch on manual pricing. Low miles at least. Cool color too.

wow pricing for 2001 is way up there. perhaps I should sell my 2006 after ski season this year.
|
I thought it was a bit high. If it was local I'd try to show up with $4300 in cash and try. All that said, there are a couple E53s locally (autos) that are around the $7k mark, one is the sand beige one I posted some time ago with the 24s and absolutely beat interior.
|
Wow, my 2001 is a lot nicer that the red one, maybe I should ask for more :-)
I may consider selling it this summer, Family just grew and need a larger vehicle that Wife can also drive. I've had my E53 for over 15 years and have enjoyed every single day. https://xoutpost.com/members/francce...2-img-6327.jpg https://xoutpost.com/members/francce...1-img-6193.jpg https://xoutpost.com/members/francce...2-img-6189.jpg https://xoutpost.com/members/francce...3-img-6199.jpg |

New E53 X5 owner here! 2004 X5 3.0i 6-speed manual in Alpine White. Acquired a few weeks ago with 140k miles. I feel like I overpaid by a few thousand, but between the E91 and E61 prices spiking, the E53 was just a *bit* heavier and *bit* sluggish around the corners. One non-functioning key, e-brake loose, steering position sensor codes, and poor power steering (bad pump, bad fluid?). No oil leaks, bushings tight, CV boots in good condition, and all door handles and electronics work.
|
Welcome!
Door handles and windows working. That's half the battle right there. At 140k keep an eye out for fuel pump and alternator failure. Wishing you many miles of smiles! Brad |
@roaringpanda congrats on the acquisition. Jealous you were able to find a 6 speed. I've put 10k> on my 2001 5 speed since I bought it, and although it definitely isn't 'quick' it's an overall great daily driver.

Got mine in December! Sold new in Idaho and stayed here its whole life. Sport package, activity, premium, xenons and more! It came with two keys and two window stickers! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Quote:
Pros: 6-speed, sport package, non-air suspension (coils on all 4 corners), mostly everything works, guy drove it 1.5 hours to deliver it to me. Cons: 6 owners on carfax, last questionable owner had it for ~2 months, one key with dead battery, no service records, power steering stiff/squealing, steering position sensor code. I'm also not sure which packages it has. VIN decoder shows sport package (and correct 131 style wheels with the sport package), but doesn't list other packages, like comfort/premium/cold weather package. It has rear sunshades and electric reclining rear seats, plus seat warmers and memory seats. Any insights on how to verify which options came with which packages? |
Hah, yeah, I'd sell my 150k 01 5spd in a heartbeat for a fraction of that amount. Seriously, after seeing that BaT result, I'm going to take some beauty shots this weekend and go fishing.

So, what did it go for?
I have owned my 2004 6 speed for 6 or so years now. While there have been a couple things to address, they haven't been much; DISA valve, front wheel bearing, coils, alternator, door handle and window regulator. AT 200k, it is still on the original clutch, engine only uses 1 qt oil every 5k miles! It still looks great with zero rust anywhere, and the interior is probably 98%. I thought about selling last year, but glad I decided to keep her- there really is nothing else out there I would want, so I have decided to refresh the drive train. Time to preemptively do a new clutch, and address a few leaks while everything is apart. |
|
https://carsandbids.com/search?q=x5%20manual
C&B has more realistic numbers in the $7k-$9k range. That $15k BAT seems like an outlier. Even as a long time enthusiast, I'm not sure what package/options makes the BAT that much more special. I know sport package has a huge impact on E61s and ZHP E46 command a premium, but the two C&B E53 LCI 6-speeds with sport packages went for under $10k. |
Quote:
I don't know that the sport package commands a premium on the E53, though. |
$15k seems quite high to me, but in the current market, what can you get that is comparable? Not much.
Anyway, dollar value be damned I have been very pleased with mine, and still consider it worth the investment of a mild refresh. More modern vehicles are saddled with hyper-complications and tech I don't want. |
Hi,
Could anyone tell me the manufacturer of the manual 5 or six speed and the part number. I am in the process of converting the auto to a manual. Thanks |
Hi,
Does the 5 spd manual from the Diesel work in the V8? |
Quote:
...and I would definitely do a 6MT if you're going to go to that effort. |
So are we still counting manual X5s?
I just picked up a 2001 5-speed manual from carsandbids.com -> https://carsandbids.com/auctions/92q...001-bmw-x5-30i https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7e6c3c06_b.jpg Sports Package, etc... |

i have a 2001 5spd sport package with 221,550 miles on it. bought it with 136K almost 5 years ago. probably have 20,000+ miles of towing with it. i wasnt even looking or new these existed when it popped up of FB for sale. sent it to a buddy who was looking for a SUV and he just bought a pathfinder (poor bastard) and after thinking about it i thought it be perfect for me. been daily driving it since. only left me stranded twice. first was the front drive shaft splines stripped and the second the new clutch had a manufacturing failure and broke on the highway.

Welcome to the club dudes!
Freedo, I'm glad to see another E53 owner who tows with the manual gearbox. I use mine primarily for that as well and it does a surprisingly great job with it. Zhent, thanks for posting your car too, though I was hoping our cars would be increasing in value a little more than that. But I'm sure you were happy to get it for that price! |
Just joined! :wavey::wavey:Wanted to add my Toledo Blue ‘06 3.0 6MT project! 108xxx miles on the dash. I’ve already got a ton of useful information from this site… hopefully can contribute back!

Manual E53 round two for me! Sold my 01’ 5 speed in 2022 and missed it since. A couple weeks ago I was going to my local pick-and-pull and noticed this in the parking lot out front. Met the guy in the yard looking for comfort seats for it, and long story short I’m buying it this week! Estoril Blue, six speed, sport package, no pano roof, no TPMS, and more! It’s definitely not perfect but it’s been cared for it’s whole life!

Feel free to add me to the list
Hi,
I finally feel comfortable that my new to me X5 is not too far gone. I found a 2001 5 speed X5 with over 300k miles on facebook marketplace in poor shape and negotiated a price of $1200. the clearcoat has pretty much flaked off on all horizontal surfaces, the driver's side door card is in pieces, brakes do not work, the drivers rear window regulator is not working, the catalytic converters had been cut off, all 4 tires were bald and not holding air, 4:3 nav radio has a smashed screen and the DSP and amp seem to be not working, among other things. So far I have done the following: welded the exhaust manifold and catalytic converters back together and replaced all 4 o2 sensors. installed a set of used tires. discovered that the brakes didn't work because the front calipers were gone, so installed new calipers, pads, wear sensors and brake lines. Now that I've got it running and driving, I think it is safe from the scrap yard and I'm overall pretty happy with it. My remaining issues: for some reason, the previous owner cut the wires going to the rear view mirror (replacement mirror on order) passenger side auto dimming mirror has leaked all of it's "dimming fluid" to the bottom 2/3 of the mirror (new mirror on order) new android radio and passive speaker crossovers (still need to install) drivers seat leather is too worn to save. driver's door panel still needs replaced. need to install new window regulator and replace the plastic window retention pieces with some I've already 3d printed. getting an air suspension inactive message (the pump runs briefly when the battery is hooked up and the truck doesn't sag at all, sensor maybe?) the transmission is difficult to put in reverse, the gear shifter is floppy and it's very easy to miss 3rd and go straight into 5th. I'll have to look into how to fix this, but I'm also tempted to see if its possible to swap in the 6 speed from the post facelift truck. haven't figured out the cargo area cover yet. not sure if mine is broken. replaced the hose between the secondary air pump and valve with a rubber hose and 3d printed adapter. handle for the cargo floor board is broken. center console armrest latch does not work. need to sew a new shift gaiter. need to replace some of the instrument cluster bulbs and replace the LCD screen (missing pixels) missing windhield washer reservoir, passenger front wheel well liner, air duct that sits above the radiator upper support, tow hook cover, front kidney grills, and center console cup holder sliding cover. glued most of the door panel back together. for now remaining codes from my Foxwell NT510 are for the AUC sensor, and the auxiliary water pump, the electric radiator fan does not come on when I trigger it using the scanner. Thats all for now. Most of the issues seem manageable and I look forward to painting the X5 and getting it back to it's former glory |
Thinking of selling my 2001 (well, late 2000) E53 X5 5 speed. Black on black, Sport package. ~165k miles
Largely nice condition, I've owned it nearly 10 years & spent money on it when needed, but I want a newer car to tow with.. I know it has a failing passenger window regulator (was going to fix it over winter, but it was just too cold in the barn) and the microswitch in the passenger door is over sensitive (sometimes says the door is open on left hand bends..) Any interest? I'll give it a clean and put some photos up in the For Sale section. Columbus Indiana. |
