Oh man...I can't believe I let you talk me into messing with these wheels tonight. They were (and still are ) stacked in the foyer where I quickly moved them this morning to get them out of the rain/snow.

I've been catching up on this dipping. I think I need to give it a try. I have the same rims, but mine are chrome from AFS Wheels in CA.

So did you take the wheels off and the bmw cap to spray them?
Did you clean them first especially in the back and remove all the build up, how did you get the heavy grime off?
Did you spray the lug nuts individually or with them on?

I have a silver X5 and blacking out these rims will look mean!

you just clean the wheel with your favorite cleaner (i don't have a favorite one), i just clean them up, so there is nothing heavy on them, let them dry and spray paint them... first time i did it, the wheels were off the car, so the lug nuts did not get painted... after the first time, i did couple touch up, while the wheels were on the car - the initial painting happened in August of 2012, the paint stayed on fine and started to peel in February of 2013, so it needed repainted...

you do not need to prep the surface - just make sure that the bugs don't land on fresh paint, seems that they like the smell or something... once the paint dries up, it is like cellophane, or plastic bag - hence the name, Plasti-Dip... If you get something wrong, wait for it to dry, and then peel it off... at $6 a can, you can afford to experiment...

Looking at my picture, I'm trying to determine if I need to get a heated mirror only or auto dimming as well since it's all blacked out and has a double image now.

you got this option

S430A INNEN-/AUSSENSPIEGEL AUT.ABBLENDEND Interior/outside mirror with auto dip

Your image doesn't give enough visual cues to be able to tell (can't tell if it has the thicker black band around the circumference)...but the option pkg TX5 looked up based on your VIN & option list...the answer is yes...you have the EC (electrochromatic - auto dimming) side view mirrors.

Regardless that the image below is the aspheric/EC/heated mirror...you can still see the thick band around the mirror glass that is a visual tell tale that you have the auto dimming mirror glass:

And if you pop the mirror glass off the circular piece that secures it to the motor & flip it around, you can see the 2 wires (upper right) that heat the mirror glass, and the electrical connector (has purple & black wires) that dims/brightens the mirror glass:

Yes, mine has the fat band around the edges. I'm hoping this is just a random occurrence since the ones on my last X5 never failed vs there being some wiring issues: it stuck in heat or dimming mode, etc. as to whatever caused this mirror to fail.

Thanks, guys.
