Can I lock it while engine is on?

Hello guys, just searched the forum but couldn't find an answer.

sometimes I need to lock my '02 X5 while keeping engine running, key is in switch, no one inside the car (to push the central locking button).

What are my choices to do so?

The reason why I want this: Here in Saudi Arabia, the weather is extremely hot & sun is very bright (and gas is cheap :D ).

If you want to park for a minute (e.g. to buy something from market) and you switch it off, you'll find your leather seat burning when you come back!

Now, if my wife is with me she can lock/unlock using center lock button.

But if I'm alone I'll need to keep it running and locked.

Weird need .. But I think a way to do it would be to buy a remote starter.. Then you can start the car while it's locked with a remote.

You didn't understand my request sir. I need to leave the car, lock it while its engine is kept running.

I don't think you can. It would defeat the purpose of the Anti-theft. The key needs to be removed from the ingnition in order to lock it. Just like you cant lock the drivers door with the central locking system if the door is open. Unless there is a coding option, I don't think it can be done.

You would have to carry both keys with you if you did get it working.

well you can lock the car, before you close the door (while the engine is still running)... However, getting back in would be quite a problem...

this is why i mentioned remote start, because then you can have your key with you--and can unlock/lock the door as you please

You can??? Hmmm.... I just tried on mine. If the X is off and I use central locking with the door open, it will lock 3 doors but not the one that is open.

I tried it with the car on, hit the central locking, and 3 doors lock but not the drivers.

But I do agree with Naz. Use a remote start system or a turbo timer. With the remote start, you have to shut the car off and when you get out lock it, then start it again, but it accomplishes your task. A turbo timer works in the same way except, when you take the key out of the ignition, the switch is bypassed and the car is left on. From there you can lock it. When you are done, hop back in, turn the key to on then take off.

I mean have you tried using 2 keys? (Assuming you have both.) Leave the one in the ignition and then the spare to lock it? I'm not sure if it will work because the ECU registers the one key.

I mean I haven't tried any of these things, except the turbo timer on my Z32. I only had it on there because after hard pulls, I didn't want to oil to sit and burn up in the turbos and seize the bearings.

Only other reason you want the car one and lock it,I would suppose is if you're gonna rob a bank and need a clean get away, but you want to lock the car so no one steals your whip while doing said robbery?

Use the spare Carbon (Wallet key) to run the engine and the regular key to lock her up.

LOL!

What about locking the car running and using the second key in the driver door lock to unlock?

TerminatorX5 07-18-2012 12:28 PM

it is possible to lock yourself out of the car using the trunk hatch - have the engine run, lock all the doors, unlock the hatch (with a button or manual pull), kroll out the car, shut the hatch...

OP never asked about how to get back in, so, this procedure does exactly what the OP asked for - locks him out of the car.

Can't you make the car start with the code thing?

That should leave your key available. Hmmm.
