+1 (except for a couple months off) From From SIB 84-13-04:

your quote is misleading, the precise production dates listed in that sib is broad in it that it combines 4 different models. the USA factory production change scheldule is one month behind all others world wide.

On 3/04 and later E46 (3 Series) and E83 (X3) and 4/04 and later E53 (X5) and E85 (Z4) vehicles, the TCU can be replaced and a Bluetooth retrofit coding
can be performed for the vehicle to support Bluetooth hands-free calling. Refer to SI B84 14 05 (Retrofitting a Telematics Control Unit (TCU) with Bluetooth
Technology).

Hi,
Attached you can see my two modules I was talking about. if I am not wrong my car's production is 10/04. whay would BMW have this installed and no bluetooth? Just for Assist?

Killcarp can yo please elaborate about the coding? I have access to GT1+Progman, Toolset32, INPA or NSCexpert. Can you please direct me?

Thanks

Interesting. I think the larger point is that whether it started in April of 2004 or later according to the source you cite, the earlier BMW Assist/BT modules from 10/03 still don't support BT- as do none of them that require a replacement module for BT function. They're simply differentiated as 'Early Production' (10/03-05/04) and 'Late Production' (05/04-10/04) with some coding/procedural differences but ultimately, the same physical replacement of the BMW Assist/BT module.

Since I didn't find the language above in any SIB- just a BMW Assist marketing bulletin B841209 of features by year, I snooped around further for a better source (read: technician audience). I found a that the BMW Assist document you cited referred back to SI B 84 14 05 (bold above) Since that is the document I also referred to, I looked for the most recent revision I could find. I found a copy from August 2008 that supersedes my original attachment of SI B 84 14 05 from 2005.

Further research reveals that the earlier '04 production E53's (even from 10/03) can also be upgraded (pdf instructions of SI B 84 14 05 attached). All the owners need to do is replace the module and follow the instructions! This is good news!

You might imagine that the issue has been discussed a bunch on this site. Even dealers were clueless about it as recently as 2008. It was reported here complete with dealer tech comments. The dealer from whom I bought my '04 E53 last year also did not know about this oddity to the '04 build years. The monster thread about 2004 BT is also right here on this site.

User after user with 2004 E53's have seen this exact problem and written to the forums.

Unless you can code it (and the SIB's say 'nay'), you'll need a new BT unit through E53 2004 production according to the SIB (attached above). I installed a replacement in my 07/04 production this year.I wanted the pairing button under the center armrest, so this is what I bought:

Item: OEM BMW Hands-Free System with Bluetooth Technology
Price: $485.00
Tax: $0.00
Qty: 1
Total: $485.00

Item: CABLE PIN ADAPTOR
Price: $14.00
Tax: $0.00
Qty: 1
Total: $14.00

Item: INSTALLATION KIT
Price: $131.20
Tax: $0.00
Qty: 1
Total: $131.20

Good info! Funny but my 4.8 is so similar to yours and not just in color. Mine is also a 07/04 build. :D
