When I had the trifecta symtom on my E39, it was the broken solder at pin7 in the ABS module (quite common in an E39 since the placement of the ABS module.) I send it out to BBA to have them fix it with lifetime warranty, buying their auction on eBay when they were running a sale on there. Drove a week without ABS.
RickyBobby, you will have to diagnose all the possible cause and eliminate one by one until you can find the cause. GL.

I will for sure diagnose all possible causes thanks! Getting scanned with GT1 tomorrow so I will post up the fault or faults I am throwing.

I thought since the E53 has better placement of the ABS module it is not as susceptible to the heat damage that the E39 modules were?

When I had this issue the first time it was the DSC module that is behind the Drivers side headlight. The second time I experienced this it was the speed sensor on the front drivers side wheel. It sounded like the ABS had no idea what to do while driving. Horrid sound, I had it towed so I could fix it. Driving was no longer a safe option.

UPDATE FROM LAST NIGHT (perhaps someone can shine light on this?):

I went out to serve some summonses last night (i do process serving as a side hustle and my wife was out running errands in her car) and when I left my house the combo of turning the wheels left and right reset the DSC, ABS, and BRAKE lights to disappear.

I drove around locally for around 20 mins or so, no lights back on. I entered the highway and in about 1 minute all 3 lights popped on and stayed on until I shut the car down when I got back.

An hour or so later, I went for a short drive again (another subpoena), the lights were all on upon starting the vehicle and pulling out of the driveway again they stayed on. After a few minutes of driving, the lights went out and stayed out until I got home later. So as of now I shut my car down yesterday with no lights active.

Is this behavior familiar to anyone? And will these faults still be in the module when I get scanned with GT1 this afternoon, even if the lights are not on??

UPDATE: I also forgot to mention that the speedo works fine and I did test cruise control last night, which also works! Even though the warning lights were on I was able to use cruise control!

Sounds more like a failing module instead of a wheel sensor.

tmv 04-02-2013 09:42 AM

^It seems like that.

I will post up codes later this evening thanks for all who have contributed so far!

GT1 does store faults and will indicate if its currently active or not. However, I don't know if that's for all faults or not.

Looking forward to the codes. Hopefully screen caps too. :D

Good call I will see if I can get screen caps and then have Neil send to my email, if not I will take as much info as I can.

looks like a pretty reasonable listing to repair modules, guy seems to really stand behind his work:

BMW ABS DSC Module Repair Service 5 and 7 Series x5 0265950002 0265950004 | eBay

TwinsPoppa 04-02-2013 12:12 PM

If you replace your DSC module, keep this thread handy in case you run into problems.

EDIT: Just so I don't scare you, maybe its too late, this should only be a problem if you end up REPLACING the module not if you repair yours.
