The other aspect of cold air intake is higher flow. The X will adjust fuel flow to match greater flow of air. The result is some gain in HP and torque. I went with Dinan, don't think AFE was available at the time. Their performance gain claim on 4.6 is 13HP and 12lb/ft or torque. FYI--Dinan version does have a closed top. The engine will sound much better as a side benefit.

Does it not make sense that the air coming from the tubing (shit, almost ram air) is colder than the engine in the engine bay? I also do not think the stock box is that terribly restrictive...

Are there any dyno tests to show these results? Sure it sounds cooler to hear the air sucking into the intake... I have never heard of self adjusting tuning.

Although "you learn something new about you x5 everyday" is an understatement to say the least!

According to AFE literature the gains with their system is 87% better than oe, up to 10hp and 20lb/ft of torque. I have worked with Dinan on many upgrades. Their numbers are always conservative and based on dyno runs. First thing I did after adding Dinan modes was verify gains. Dyno runs showed a little 10% better than Dinan numbers. A tune is not needed as MAF will sense increased air and add fuel. More aggressive engine mods will require new engine software but not cold air intake. Even if AFE system draws some hot the increased volume is where the gain comes.

Mike nice job! Details on what rotors/pads you went with, and which alternator?

Have you had the brakes flushed since getting the car (brake fluid deteriorates so should be done every couple years)

Mike, are those new rotors black like that all the way through or is it just a coating?

while we are waiting for Mike's response, i will speculate that the rotors are just coated - for them to be all the way through black, the material must be black, however, material is metal, steel of certain grade, and steel has "metallic" color and i am not aware of "food color" for metals... Cast iron can be black but when you break it, the break line is still with metallic flakes...

now, if the material was not metal, then it could be of a color - do they make rotors from anything other then metal? like the pads, ceramic compound, perhaps? or some kind of NASA space fiber???:dunno:
