Door Handle Replacement Issue

Hi guys,

I have another issue that I was hoping you guys could help with. I'm currently in the process of replacing the door handle. The problem I'm facing is when I place the lock assemble back into place, the hex bolt misses the hole. I've tried a few different alignments of the door handle but I'm still not having any luck. Do you guys have any tips?

Thanks in advanced!

The hex bolt that goes into the door jamb part? The 6mm bolt... That handle needs to be pulled up a bit in order for the holes to align. You can wedge something between the mechanism to give you the clearance you need.

Thanks for the quick response TwinTurboGTR. I'm a little confused on what you mean. I'm in the process of installing this piece.

The hex bolt sits too far to the left, towards the front of the car.

you have to make sure the star end of the lock is lined up properly with the lock mechanism (not going in crooked). note make sure your latch is working before closing the door from inside and out you don`t want to pull the inner pannel off with the door closed.

puddinboo,

I just confirmed that the lock is lined up properly with the lock mechanism. I'm able to lock the door but the hex bolt still does not line up correctly.

Ok so from that picture, I am assuming you are following PersonaNonGrata's DIY. If the cylinder is not matching up with the holes to get the bolt in, then the mechanism is not in properly. Is this carrier OE, or did you pick up a cheapie from ebay or amazon?

Are you sure have the carrier installed correctly?

Here's a procedure on installing the door lock, but the carrier must be installed correctly. E46 lock is similar to E53 in terms of design.

Upallnight,

I took a look at the video and am confident that I am following the right procedure.

I just did this and it took me a few tries to get the carrier in the right position to get the lock cylinder in.

What finally worked for me was leaving the screw that goes in near the back loose and pushing the carrier forward as far as possible, then installing the cable & ball & then tightening the screw. Then I inserted the door handle and was able to get the lock cylinder in. I had to push the cylinder assy and was pushing the allen I had the hex taped to (to avoid losing it into the door)

Good luck.

e30cabrio,

Thanks but I'm still not able to get it seated correctly. Everything I adjust the the position of the door handle, I still get the bolt sitting to the left. Please see the image. The red dot is where the bolt should be.

I pulled the door handle out a bit and was able to push the lock "tumbler" up a bit but it becomes really hard to screw in.
