Well here we have another one on my 4.8is.
I have Air Suspension Inactive message on the dash and the car is not raising or lowering. I have no sag and all four corners appear (to the eye) to be level. My ride height switch is NOT illuminating at all and the compressor is not running - nothing, dead, zilch. I have checked all the fuses and all are good. I have opened the boot floor and checked the radio well with zero water ingress (I have no sun roof). Next I took the compressor housing apart. Oh Oh. The thick red & white wire was stripped of insulation where it has been rubbing on one of the retaining bolts. No burning or melting just bare clean copper wire. I have re-insulated that wire but the pump is still not running and the switch is still not illuminating. A volt meter at the pump shows zero volts at the pump end. So next I tried the fuseable links on the left rear of the boot floor (behind the seat in blue box with white cover) These all have continuity and all are showing battery voltage - I am assuming that these are all good. I am told that there is a "Relay" next to the radio module and this may be bad as I have no voltage at the pump? On calling BMW (Lookers) they were of no help and could not tell me anything about the relay or even if there is one? Can I ask please: Is there a relay or another fuse somewhere? I have checked the fuses in the glove box and the boot. Given I have no power at the pump? is it likely to be the relay or is that because I have the tailgate open? |
Hi Folks - need urgent help with the 4.8is...
Can anyone help? ALS is off again but that is not the root cause. I have a code 32 on self level (Can bus) but cannot clear it for more than a few secs due to another fault. Yellow 4 x 4 warning is on mid dash. Code reader says 5F08 DSC Sensor Lateral Acceleration Plausibility I can't clear it. I can buy a sensor on e-bay but cannot find part no. on-line.... Is it Bosch 6753694 ?? Then where the heck is it located..... ? Others have mentioned a YAW sensor... is this one and the same thing? Is there a chance it could be the DSC iii 5.7 control module - hope not - also where is that located any ideas?? HELP ! Big thanks... Malc |
Hi guys. I just buy last week a 4.8is...and the seller told me that he never use the up/down button from inside, so the suspension isnt working.
When i press the button, the middle led blings 3 times... But every morning i find the car OK, with no air leaks. I put Inpa on the X and i find this errors...but i dont have any erros on my dashboard. 116 reservoir pressure remain constant 50 Can bus What can i do first ? What can i check first ? |
Reset the error and the pump should kick in. The problem is the pump is weak and not able to increase pressure in the reservoirs. You'll probably need to get the refurb kit from bagpipingandy.

One of the big failure points of older air suspension systems is the piston ring on the compressor getting extremely worn and not able to seal in the cylinder bore which prevents the pump from generating the pressures needed for the system to operate.
Mild pitting and scarring of the cylinder bore can be remedied with a light buffing using fine sandpaper. After changing my compressor piston ring my system was restored to full operating status. Below you can see how nasty the old piston ring had become. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/5e...g=w668-h890-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/E-...A=w668-h890-no Mike |
So this is my problem ? That piston ring ?
1. If i order it, is hard to change it ? 2. If i disconnect the compresor to change the ring, the car will be low ? 3. After i change the ring, just plug back the compresor, delete the error with Inpa, and the leverl button will work to rise and low the car ? Sorry for all my questions, but i'm a bit affrair, not to do something wrong and can't use the car anymore. |

Here is the bagpipinandy website with all the info http://www.bagpipingandy.com He is on your side of the pond too  Personally I used a lower cost kit off eBay that was about $13 https://www.ebay.com/itm/182674841312 Watch the videos and see how the replacement is done. Rather simple if you go slowly and meticulously. https://youtu.be/LKqiwaxrWAk I did not lose any air in my system when I disconnected the lines. There are probably check valves in the system to prevent loss of air. I used Creator310 code reader to reset my errors and after changing the piston ring my system functions as designed raising and lower with switch commands. Good Luck. Mike |
Arrrrgh that ol' compressor chestnut!
Hi Gogubjp .... they guys above are absolutely correct... :iagree:
Looks like classic weak compressor... at least that is the cheapest place to start! I bought the piston ring from bagpipingandy.... £25? Don't buy anywhere else as the material is too hard with the other sellers - I tried once before I found Andy via here. :p: My one from Andy lasted initially about a year but my compressor wrecked the ring because it was scored inside. Again Andy got me a new cylinder head (for compressor) £40....... amazing when you think that BMW Portsmouth want £1200 + VAT just for the compressor - they will not service them. :wow: The car will not sink... if you have no leaks it should stay up always. Disconnecting the compressor makes no difference to height - if the ignition is off there will be no pressure on the compressor side if yours inactive. It took me about an hour first time I changed it. But only 20mins max once you have done it once - lets hope you only have to do it once  The new one has been in for over 2 years no probs - in fact it has more pressure now (14 Bars) ..... if your system drops below 9 bars it will not operate. BPAndy has posted great videos on youtube & on his site... go slow & steady... he does it in about 4 mins flat ! Be bold - have a go or get the kit, then get Justin at E-Tech Motorsport Havant to do it for you.... (am I right in saying you are in the same town? PS: I am in Chichester area)... he is one of the few people who I have met who completely understands the system in the South - v honest guy - he did the levelling calibration on mine after another fault where mine sagged due to other issues. Once the compressor ring is replaced the system will still not raise or lower until you wipe out those codes... Drop me a line if any probs... If you go to J tell him hi from me (Malc with the 4.8is in Selsey) Best M  |
Incredible, that guy is 2miles away from my house 😂😂
Tomorrow i go and speak with him. Thanks a lot brov 🥂 And btw, you have PM |
