if read that this is a common problem on the x5.mine been 2002 3.0i where at idle in park the engine is smooth as whistle. but when put in drive at idle only there is a small vibration very noticeable.then goes away while driving, mine just started doing this any body know or found the fix.????

Pretty sure the transmission vibrates when engaged.

There are several threads about this problem. None that I have seen have come to an easy definite resolution. Some have said it's the motor mounts but others say changing the mounts did nothing. Some say the trans needs to be flashed. Others say no. The last one I've heard is that there could be an unmetered air leak in the intake (I know for a fact this will cause weird engine vibrations) but unmetered leaks usually result in a code or CEL. This is what I have found in the threads. Mine still vibrates because I'm not going to just throw money at the car for a problem (possibly one that is only perceived) that doesn't seem to be too serious.

lift the car up, check the thread on each tire, see if the tires are cupping, uneven worn... they can cause vibration, and the faulty suspension parts can cause the uneven tire wear... check the bushings, see if they are good, check the guibo - at that age rubber parts start (or, i should say - finish) to deteriorate, causing all kind of ruckus...

this is not a while driving issue. it is only when the vehicle in in D or R AND STANDING STILL.not moving at all.

thanks i've found threads that clearly states after taking the suv to the dealer they were told this is a common known problem on the x5.
i think and i can be wrong but when you clean out the throttle body and the idle air solenoid you have to drive the vehicle for a few miles so the computer can reset to the new settings compare to before when there was gum build up.at least is what i found on previous bmw when i had 92 325i i barely see an rpm change when ac is on or off compare when there was no issue so again i suspect idle solenoid.i use a long piece of hose that i put to my ear to listen for vaccume leaks Quote:

my bad - i must have misread your original post... carry on, i think you are on the right track

Check the purge valve...

I would start by checking to see if there are error codes. There are so many potential causes you will likely spend a lot of $$$$ throwing parts at it if you don't. Checking for codes would help narrow the possibilities if any are present.
When you go from neutral or park to any gear there is more load on the engine, transmission, torque convertor, even the suspension. That's the reason there are so many potential causes. Troubleshoot, troubleshoot! |
mine did that and I had the engine mounts replaced. Smooth now.
