New engine or part out
It would appear I have scored cylinder walls in my 2006 4.8is. The dealer has quoted me $28000 to replace it with a crate from Germany. I have SAL extended warranty, but they say because the black book value is of $15000, that's the amount they will cover. That means the other $13000 is on me. Does it make more sense to by a new engine, or scrap this thing. I have 135000 kms.

Is there a reputable engine rebuilder around?
|
Methyl couldn't you put a used engine in?
|
I know 4.8 engines arent like honda engines in a junkyard, but id presume you could definetly source one under 15k.

A low-mileage, used engine can be swapped in for much less. GL

Dealer is looking for a used one, but all the ones they have found so far are higher mileage. Used engine does seem like the best option.

I'm with RB. I'd seriously look at having your engine rebuilt and likely only needing it bored 2 over would suffice for the scored walls. It's just a V-8 engine not a jet turbine. There's nothing weird about BMWs.
Almost 30K for a new engine is insane. |
If you want a reliable engine ditch the 4.8 and install a chevy 350 for a couple grand.

new engine

The car will be worth roughly zero dollars more with a brand new engine in it. You need to decide what the vehicle is worth to you.
Me? I would be moving on. |
