I have been looking through all the forums and I just can't seem to find the right tread. I'm sure there is one out there but this forum is too big!

Anyways, my question is that I have a 2004 BMW X5 3.0i. I bought it in 2011 because it only had 55,000 miles and got it for $19,000ish. I want to upgrade my wheels/rims. I believe my rims right now are 18in but I think I want to go to 20 because my main goal is to widen out the tires. I think the x5 gets a meaner look with wider tires.

Any recommendation on what to do?

You could get bigger X5 wheels or go aftermarket.

I plan to get Style 87 wheels which come off of the 4.6is. They are a 20" wheel and look perfect in my opinion. There are also a few other OE choices that look great.

Style 87 or Style 168 is my choice for that X.

20" staggered BELONG on an E53.

Thanks for the suggestion. Along with rims, I need wider tires. What tire size am I looking for to get that wider look?

It depends on if you're getting a staggered set-up (fronts are narrower than the rear) or a square set-up (all 4 wheels are the same width).

But for either...I would start with the recommendation from BMW...which is listed on your driver's door and the owners manual (for the 17"/18"/19"/20" wheel sizes).

There should be a tire pressure inflation chart on your driver's door that list not only the recommended tire pressure..but the various tire sizes as well...and should be the same as the chart from the owners manual (see below): :)

The OP's wheels are Style 131, 18" same size front and rear.
Could go to 20s, and 87s are fine looking, or 168/177, but good wheels in that size are pricey/may be scuffed used, or only new/clean as replicas.

Tires for that size are not inexpensive either...
87s and their ilk take 275/40R/20 in front and 315/35R/20 in rear.
I don't see the need or good use of squeezing larger tire sizes on those 20" wheels...

They are considered 'staggered' as in the front wheel/tire combo is slightly less wide than rear, though both f/r have same rolling circumference.

19s in staggered are also a consideration and may be slightly less costly, eg
Style 132, Style 63, (very close look to your current wheels), et al.

20" on BMW OE wheeel 168

The X5 has a tendency to make any wheel size less than 20" look smallish. IMO anyway... I'm sure there are those who disagree. I went with some X6M (I think that's what they were from) reps off ebay for $800. 20x9.5 in front and 20x10.5 in rear. They are heavier than the OEM ones, not finished as good, and are harder to balance but they are cheap and look great. I'm running 285's up front and 315's in rear. This is a pic of them... not my car, but same wheel and suspension setup.

If Your X5 is made for the 20" wheel go for it, but yours is not....the TC and Tranny are going to be stressed..........just saying......
