A tip for the fuse box, there are little tiny numbers molded into the fusebox plastic about every 10 fuses I believe. So that way it helps you from losing track while counting. You may need a flash light to see them.

To throw my 2¢ in....BMW made it real easy to use the fuse index & diagram.

First the fuses are listed alphabetically with their fuse number location listed in the fuse box.

Second, they have an illustration of the fuse box with the fuse locations numbered...along with the fuse's amperage listed.

Third, if the fuse location is empty in the fuse box...either a previous owner removed the fuse or you don't have that option. Since every location in the fuse box is numbered...YES...you count the empty spaces...if not, the fuse index would be off or different from other X5s that are optioned differently which wouldn't make sense.

You can use the example below from my 06 4.4 to see what I mean...and how simple and easy the fuse index is laid out...the illustration shows the rear fuses run from #72 - #87 along with the amperage of that fuse....and below that is the alphabetical list of the fuses along with their fuse #. You can also see that fuse #76 is empty...yet you still count that space even though it isn't filled:
