$510 total damage. Could be worse I guess...

I have a used FRM I could sell you - works perfect, just needs to be coded. Shoot me a private msg.

I have used Carly a number of times with Bluetooth and had no problems.

I think part of the problem is the older the modules get, the more likely they are to have problems when flashing. Even the dealers have problems from time to time with DME's and other modules bricking.

Chances are it would have bricked using a cable as well.

The reality is that most people shouldn't be tampering with the modules in their cars to start with - programs like Carly and others have almost made it too easy, and people don't understand all the specifics behind what they are doing. They see something on the Internet, order it and download it, but don't read through all the information.

This is true. I got into it knowing that there's a risk of damage.

He will need to know how to use winkfp to write his vin to it, and he better hope the mileage stored there is lower than what he currently has on his car ;)

My understanding was Autologic can reprogram used FRMs - am I mistaken?

A few of us added LED headlights to our X6s, and one of the members had a used FRM that he reprogrammed with NCS Expert. I know E53 LCM stored mileage, but I am not sure FRM in E70 does...

I know BMW dealership tools (ISTA/P) will only program new modules.

The reason is that the mileage is synced I believe. The higher mileage is synced between the kombi cas and frm using the highest mileage. When I swapped from FRM2 to a new FRM3, I used winkfp to program the vin. When I read my old FRM 2, it would only allow changing of the vin 2 more times. After that, its NCS Expert to program the FRM to the FA.

Not sure if autologic can reprogram used FRMs including changing of the vin, without getting a tamper dot. I am not 100% sure, so if mileage is not stored in frm and only kombi and cas, it wouldn't be a concern

They don't read through it all, kind'a like the available BMW technical literature, even their Owners Manual

Great links that Doug just posted for everyone to read through - these are complicated and expensive vehicles for a reason :)

No, it is not the fault of the adapter or Carly.

Since replacement, I've coded over a dozen times, FRM too. These problems can occur with this type of programming using any means.

So it sounds like this is a issue with the 8/2011 E series FRM and not Carly or the EML adapter right?

I've had the same problem, and ordered a new FRM3. I'm a little unsure if I trust using Carly again. But I really want to because it's so damn easy to use.

josiahg52 02-10-2016 05:12 PM

Not exactly. In my case, voltage dropped too low during the programming process. Any fluctuations or disturbances can cause issues.

I've used the Carly adapter and application with zero issues since. Just understand there's always risk.
