New to Forum-Need Help
 

My wife drives a 2009 X5 30idrive. Recently we had the water pump replace, fuel lines, thermostat and a few other things. We paid the $2200 dollar bill and drove it that night to my son's track practice. After practice the car would not start. The lights come on, the windshield wipers run wide open, and the dash lights come on. Other than those things nothing happens. We had it towed back down to the mechanic who had worked on it. They could not find the issue. The next day we had it towed to BMW dealership to run diagnostic scan on it. They told me it was an electrical issue and wanted $1100 up front to start trying to find out what it was. I had it towed home. So far i have found that the battery in the vehicle was the wrong size. Changed it to the correct size battery. I have also changed a few relays and checked most of the fuses. Still nothing works. Just the head lights, windshield wipers and dash lights. Has anyone else ever seen this???

The two relays i replaced were tested and were bad. The battery was the wrong size. That's primarily why i changed those parts. If there were codes that could be looked at why didnt the dealership disclose that information?

Where are these sold? And what is a recommended brand?

I bought a foxwell NT530 which came with bmw-specific software. Loaded ford software as well - works great for manufacturer specific codes and functionality including battery/abs/srs/transmission and body module interrogation/activating dealer-specific tasks such as injector balancing, missfire logging and stuff I have yet to experiment with. Looks like your problem centers around the DTML pump in EVAP system. I’ve never had to diagnose issues with that system before but hopefully others can chime in.

You're going to need a BMW specific code reader as mentioned. Those codes are for evap and lack of communication with trans and throttle. But they are just generic P codes indicating a system that could be faulty. Lots of parts in each system. As mentioned a Foxwell nt520/510/530 are great. I use a 520 almost constantly ( I have 5 BMW's).

Could those codes cause the car not to do anything besides the headlights, dashlights, and windshield wipers to come on?

Lack of communication certainly could depending on what has lost connection/lost power/fried/or died. But again those are just generic codes. I wouldn't start trying to diagnose anything based on those alone.

just ordered foxwell nt530. i hope that it will help pin point the problem. i have already dumped a ton of money into this thing
