Well, news to post. Haven't abandoned the poor thing. Finally found a trans (88000 miles verified by VIN lookup). Looks to be good, though it has been sitting for about a year according to the seller. No biggie. Not too bad, got it for $800 (+ Texas taxes) shipped. Will update as I make progress on it.

Great news!

Work has begun. Spent about 10 hours on it yesterday with a buddy. Made some good progress and then hit a major blockage. But it was 1:30AM at blockage so I called it for the day. So far:
My guess is that I am going to have to remove the DPF. That looks fun as it will involve suspending the engine and lowering the subframe. Amazing packaging job... but sucks to work on anything on these diesels. Will post some pictures later. |
If there are no pictures, it never happened.... :-)
Good to hear you got around to this job. I saw mine with the DPF out and that was on a lift, plenty of surgery. To my mind these things are like a Ferrari. Need to do something to the engine? First remove the engine from the vehicle.... Do the needful and then do the "while you are in there".
Hope it all works out! |

I am in agreement TriX5. Very Ferrari like in their serviceability. I am rapidly adding items to an FCP Euro order. To include, exhaust gaskets, Vband clamp for turbo, Xfer case mount (this one is completely ripped out @ 166k miles), some aluminum bolts, guibos (these are fine, but I don't want to get down there again in my ownership, and possibly engine mounts depending on their condition upon removal.
Some pictures. The patient. Attachment 79820 Some of the carnage. Attachment 79821 The bane of my existence. Attachment 79824 Attachment 79823 Attachment 79822 Next step is to grab my engine support bar and raise the engine an inch or so off the motor mounts (after undoing nuts). Then remove the right side engine mount arm and engine mount itself. THAT should give me the clearance I need. If not, I will also have to lower the subframe on that side by an inch or so. |
Not sure if you can do this or not but on E90s you can loosen the subframe so that it hangs down with everything but the motor mounts attached.

We're now ~$785 poorer. Had about $500 worth of service parts (I went ahead and ordered the engine mounts even if they are good, but they're expensive) for the E70 and then another $220 for a trans service on the F15. I don't want to have to do a trans swap on the F15 later... Will be hitting this again Friday evening. Updates to follow. |
I was going to tell you to do the mounts if you are doing there, incuding the one for the transfer case. Might as well do the guibo as well.

So I was in the garage having a think and looking at the X5. Couple of issues arose as I gazed begrudgingly at the M57. First, where do you lift this thing from? I6 gas cars have the threaded tow hook insert right next to the engine oil filter housing. This one... who knows?
And second, I just realized (more remembered) the E70 has plastic fenders and so using the traditional engine support bar is not an option. After some googling, I saw that Schwaben makes a neat looking Xbar that would do the job, but... lol, I think I'll just use the engine hoist to temporarily lift it a little bit. HAH!!! Or, I could try to find something like this lying around in the garage, Attachment 79852 Not likely. Edit: Nevermind on point 1. Found the lifting hoop just behind the EGR. Duh, must being going blind as well as senile. :D |
