There are hash marks that follow the tach in the newer designed bimmers. I noticed it on the E60's. This is the future, most likely MB/VW/Porsche/Audi and other Euros will lose the temp gauge in the future.

SilverBullet 02-22-2007 06:55 PM

I always liked the temp guage.

Ok i'll find a pic for you whiners... lol...

Here is a link to get you started form the E60 board...

Edit:

ok...

so here is the best I can do, while trying to take lecture notes in class... :) (see what I go through for you guys?)...

Ok in this first image, we have a semi warmed up 530d engine (same tachs as the E70). Look between 4500 & 5000 revs. There are little lines there. At a cold start up they hang around 3, and slowly move up along the tach until the engine is warm. The first line shows you how far you should rev the engine - just like the color lit gauges on an 4.8is & M models (except instead of using colored lights, there are little spring held lines).

In this second picture we see a basically warmed up 520i. The white lines are all the way right below the red rev-line.

Hopefully this helped. Its very cool to see in person, as the engine warms up. Btw, the same thing happens on the speedo, when you set cruise control. A white line spring from its hidden position behind 150 mph down to whatever speed you set them (80mph).

Look at a dash picture or better yet look at an actual dashboard and it'll be clear. Just look right above the redline area and you'll see the small lines.

E61Silver 02-22-2007 07:11 PM

I don't think moving the red line on the tack is as helpful.

I know that on the 335I they have put back the temp gauge and droped the mpg gauge.

Thanks for the information.

I think that anyone that revs a ice cold car to the 5000 reduced red line is crazy.

Thanks MD Excellent encouragement.

My opin: a little reading beats a lot of "posting".

I agree, 5000 RPM on a cold engine is crazy. According to xx3's post above it starts at at around 3000 RPM when cold so it's workable.

xnsf 02-22-2007 07:17 PM

ohhh...so that's what the track is for on the rpm side. thanks for the pic

interesting, i've never seen this on the e90...

trueX5er 02-22-2007 07:24 PM

Thanks a ton, xx3! That's what I was trying to describe! :)

There is an accessory module called ACM or OPM (in English) for the e60 and e90, etc. which controls TV, DVD, front and rear cameras, and also provides info on oil temp, coolant temp and battery voltage. The following pic is from the manual. As Rudy on the e60 forum said, "You'd think by now BMW would've created an iDrive screen to display the vital signs that are already being monitored...how hard could it be?"
