exhaust fluid, i was sure that was a joke. lol

I was going to buy a bottle at delivery and store it in the cargo bay, until the parts guys brought it out. That is one goofy shaped bottle (think translucent bowling pin) with a high tech filler connector. I couldn't figure out where it would conveniently fit in the X5, so I gave it a miss. I'll probably pick a bottle up when I get the oil and filter tomorrow. I figure these exhaust fluid bottles will be diesel gear head collector items :rolleyes:

Hope the diesel doesn't end up being more trouble than it's worth.

Guess the ECO credit will help smooth out the bumps.

It does come full from the factory... Unless they forgot to fill it? My dealer said it came filled from the factory.

I just got the warning that I have 9xx miles before no start. I've got 3050 miles on mine now. Why should I have to fill so soon? We did get this warning as we were travelling thru the eastern Sierras with chain controls in effect. It got down to 10 degrees. Btw, the X handled like a dream! I've had it now for 3.5 weeks and have driven it a lot. Love it! I'll be taking it in tomorrow.

Let us know what the dealer says...

I've decided to wait on taking it in. The message did not come up today. Maybe I just got that message because it was so cold and we had been traveling in that cold temp. for quite awhile. We were also going up a steep hill when the message came up. I'm just going to give it a few days and see if it reappears. I'll let you know if it rears its ugly head again this soon.

Could be. The main tank is not heated, and the stuff freezes at 23 degrees, i.e., no automatic pumping from the main tank to the heated tank if it's been below 23 degrees for a while. I have no idea what strategy is used to regulate the pumping, but I suspect it is either a float or electronic level measurement, that pumps a slug of the fluid from the main tank to the heated tank when the level gets down to a trigger point in the heated tank.


BMW does warn that in prolonged cold weather, the heated tank may have to be refilled manually every 2-3,000 miles.

FWIW There is a fair amount of rhythmic (pumping?) noises in our 35d's engine compartment almost every time we shut her down. I've always assumed this was related to the 35d exhaust system. Either pumping urea from the storage tank to the active tank or burning off the particulates in the filter or both.

Does anyone know what the 35d is doing just after engine shut down?

p.s. we have a little over 4k miles on the 35d. Nearly all of our driving involves round trips between 25 and 100+mi. It has not gotten to freezing temps yet here in the Texas Hill Country.
