I think it depends if your garage door opener has a static code or one that keeps changing. For the garage doors that has a static code, you can use the remote to program. For those garage doors that have a changing code, you will need to program from the actual unit.

Make sure the X is within a reasonable proximity with a line of sight to the garage door unit and there should be a button on the unit to send out a signal. Then run into the X and program. It will learn the sequence of changing codes and you'll be set.
