Also, don't let them tell you what to do. Inform them that "xyz will be doing the work, I will have them send you an estimate". If they say "oh, our adjuster needs to look at it" simply respond with "no, they don't. Your insured is responsible for my loss- and I will let you know what it is. Please recognize that YOUR internal procedures and policies are not applicable to ME- they may be to your insured, but not to ME. If, after I get you the estimate, you would like to inspect it, I will allow that as a courtesy".

When my 2005 X got sideswiped by a city bus at a red light I had the BMW dealer fix it. HUGE MISTAKE

I know, some people assume that that the body shop at the dealership is the best but that can be a big mistake. I have used the shop at my dealership a few times and they do great work. Hopefully they wont let me down this time.

Sorry about the accident.

Our 15 X5 got rear ended by unsinured a few months ago, the damage was similar as yours except our E70 has hitch.

BMW dealership didn't really do repairs, they only sell cars, but they have partnership with some body shop "approved" by BMW, any way, our car is done well, but it's costy, the total repair bill ended up $7000+, fortunately our insurance took care of it and we paid $100 deductible.

I didn't involve my insurance company so it should cost me nothing. What was your original estimate? I am getting mine tomorrow but I am expecting the actual repair will be more than the initial estimate.

miamipanther 05-07-2012 09:17 PM

Our original estimate was about 4K;

Make sure to talk with the shop OEM parts only for repair; For the bumper, new bumper instead of repairing

Sometimes insurance will give low estimate to repair some components instead of ordering new one, and aftermarket parts to save a little money here and there.

You can talk to the shop about your opinion, they know how to deal with the insurance company.

What happened to the guy who hit you? Did they run or did they get ticketed/jailed? I hate people who are uninsured. Unless you get into wrecks every day, you usually pay maybe $50-60/month if you get a local company. I don't see what's so hard.

It may sound ridiculous but that guy just walked away.

The Adjuster from the other drivers insurance company just provided some comic reliefe. The estimate he came up was $1,700 for parts material and labor. I understand the only way to get an exact estimate is to take it apart but to replace and paint the tail gate alone would cost more than that. There is damage to the lift gate and the bumper cover as well (bumper cover likely needs to be replaced).

miamipanther 05-08-2012 01:38 PM

This is adjuster estimate, the shop will give its own estimate, once the job is done, there will be anotehr bill.

The final bill probably could be as twice. It's all between shop and insurance, you shouldn't be involved.

Don't think the damage may be enough to deal with, but assuming it's not a lease you may want to argue about diminished value as CARFAX may show that work has been done to the vehicle...just a little more ammo to throw at them...
