Bluetooth Retrofit 2001 X5 woes

Hi All,

Sorry if im asking an allready asked question.

I have at 2001 model x5 4.4 withouth bluetooth. I really want to install it. It is however VERY costly (3000+ USD), and my Local BMW shop is not real happy to do it as they say there are many problems with getting phones to work ok with the kit BMW suggest should be mounted.

I asked for the details, and here it is;

Car Manuafctured in Gernmany for US Market on 5 september 2001

According to BMW the Option kit to mount is 8464 0302 179
This kit should support production run from april 2001 to october 2001
within the kit mentioned above is something identified with 8421 6938 610 (some electronics box).

By installing the above option My local dealer tells me I will be severely limited as to pairing new bluetooth phones and get a fully functioning integration, only newer phone that works allright is ericsson t630 and nokia 6230i. (not really an option as i will be changing my phone every 2 years or so)

There is a NEWER set available from BMW (for models manufactured april 2002 onwards), known as 8464 0302 177, containing electronics 8410 6969 268. However the dealer is unsure if this kit can be mounted in the car with success. This new kit supports many more phones - also future bluetooth enabled phones. So This Is the kit that could justify the exorbitant cost.

Anybody have any experience with these issues.

Notice that I'm in denmark and car prices here are ridiculous... so the cost does not bother me as much as the lack of future-proofing.

My Current phone is a t630.

I retrofitted the BMW Bluetooth system into my 2001 X5 and it was very straightforward. I am able to pair lots of BT enabled phones, including but not limimted to the Motorola V600, Motorola V551, Motorola V3 Razr, and the SE Z600. See http://www.xoutpost.com/articles.php?...ticle&artid=26 for my installation.

My vehicle has the phone prep, but it sounds like yours may not. According to Jan's write-up at http://www.janixworld.com/x5/phone/ the kit you need to buy if your car does NOT have option S640A installed is part number 84 64 0 153 227 at approximately 750 Euros (without snap-in holder, plus tax) and installation time is somewhere around 10 hrs.

Does kit 84 64 0 153 227 indeed fit cars before 03/2002 ?

Hi UCrewX5,

Thanks for Answering. I've read up on your Retrofit - but you are buying a kit not from BMW - but somebody else. I Think Janix's Writeup it the one to follow for me. The kit number 84 64 0 153 227 seems to be for cars from 03/2002 onwards ??? mine is older than that (09/2001)

I've sent the details to the BMW Shop - lets see what they say..

Thanks for the input!

Regards,

I installed the BMW bluetooth system using the adaptor harnesses made by AdvancedAutovations.

So I've got S640A Option. But...

Hi All,

As the Title say, the BMW shop tells me that I have the option S640A :) , which means that i shoud not need 84 64 0 153 227..

Still 'Im trying to find if ANYBODY have mounted; 84 64 0 302 177 + 84 10 6 969 268 on a pre 03/2002 manufactured X5 ?????

Regards, Ohmegastar..

(do i need a new thread to get answers ??)

Mine was manufactured on 11/01. I bought the ULF module & harness from Advancedautovations as well.

Hi,

Can I ask why you're all ordering the advanceautovations kit - and not the original bmw one... ???

As I'm in Denmark I do have a concern about (potential) EURO compatibility issues of the advanceautovations kit - so I'm currently not even considering it.

can you give the the sales pitch for the autovations kit compared against the bmw offering. not the hype - but the real facts from a user standpoint..

There were 2 main reasons for me. Crevier BMW (my parts supplier of choice in CA), was not selling BT ULF modules due to the fact that BMW USA still had >3,000 early generation modules that they were forcing dealers to sell before they would let dealers start shipping the latest ULF modules. AA's had the ULF module in stock at roughly the same price as going through the dealer. In addition, AA's makes the needed custom wiring harness that connects to your DB25 plug in order to make the system operational. Martin Bishop is the only other person to get this custom harness from. The downside is that AA's is a small outfit, very busy, and often tough to get information from. I'm pretty sure that even if you get the module from the dealer, that you will have to buy the custom harness to make it work.

Ah, I get it - so the ULF box you get from advance is the BMW one :-) Can i ask which part no's.

As I understand the harness created by advance - thats simply the one matching S640A option (or 84 64 0 153 227) from BMW...
