Transfered vehicle to indy shop because repair quote was almost $1K less. Drained tank. Replaced fuel pump w/fuel filter unit, level sender, & spark plugs. Added chemical to remove water from fuel system. Added fresh gas & ran for several hours. Injectors survived, but we know they fail anyway. Seller owns that one store only so no $$ there.
Now store is for sale ,btw. Discussed w/ Shell. Not responsible once fuel leaves refinery. Got inspection reports fron State fuel lab for local wholesaler & seller. Seller inspected once a year . Wholesaler once a month. Wholesaler uses 3rd party to deliver fuel to seller. No way to trace source of contamination & no one takes responsibilty of course.
Lesson learned: use station that has high turnover & in a neighborhood that sells some quanity of Premium fuel. Don't use the closest station when a better station is an option & may take an extra five minutes to drive to.

I know this discussion has been focused on X5M's, but I received the "Engine Malfunction. Reduced Power. Possible To Continue. Have Checked at nearest BMW Center" warning in my 2009 X5 xDrive 35d. This occurred during a casual, highway jaunt in Alabama. SA told me to stop the car, wait a while and see if the warning returns. I did and it did.

The warning popped up numerous times over the weekend before I could get the vehicle to my dealer. I did notice it appeared more frequently when reducing throttle position.

Anyway, my car has been in the shop for 3 days and the findings are a worn/loose hose was allowing too much air into the intake system. They will be replacing the hose and two bolts. Hope this fixes the issue.

I have owned the X5 since 2012 buying it used off the lot with 29k miles. I love it and hope this issue is fixed and don't have to deal with the difficult experiences that J endured.

Bumping this thread since I've been randomly having the same issue in my 1/2010 build X5M. Long story short, I've replaced the PCV lines going from the valves covers to the intake, the turbo inlets with new gaskets, -12 index injectors (a few index -07 had failed and leaked, do I replaced them all) and even after my MorePower.dk tune, I'm still getting it. It sounds like the car is stuttering right nefore it happens, can be modulated via throttle input, but it happens if I stay hard in the throttle. Tuner says he thinks it's a boost leak based on the power band readings from the dyno, I'll be replacing plugs and smoke testing it before my next dyno runs.
