If you look at the BMWUSA Facebook page, you see their target audience.
If Woodcliff Lake gets their way, the X1 will be replacing the Subaru Outback as the pot-powered hippy "My kids have been vegan since conception" tree hugger hypocrite mobile.

Pretty disappointing, since I found that the X1 xDrive23d was a damn good car in Germany.

The X1 is cheaper than the 3 series wagon and unlike the 3 series is available with the turbo six in the US. It may also drive better since it is built on the E90 chassis rather than the F30.

I can understand BMW NA wanting to make cars easier to sell off dealer lots, but between the Lines and Packages, it's nearly impossible to get the car you want unless you happen to want lots of expensive upgrades. But then, suddenly the X1 makes very little sense compared to the X3 which has a more updated software system and more comfortable cabin.

x1 35i built the way i wanted is $49,400 an x3 35i equipped the way i would like it would be $64,600. substantial difference. not in the same league.
