Hard 1-2 shift
Specifically what I'm asking about is if you start out from being stopped and get into the gas a bit, pushing the revs to about 5K, when it shifts from 1st to 2nd, it shifts so hard it almost feels like a BANG. At lower RPMS and in manual mode, it shifts much more smoothly. Is this how all the Steptronics shift?

That all depends but it certainly shouldn't shift with a bang.
My '04 took a while to learn my driving style and shift properly and there would times it would seriously lag or ramp up the RPM's excessively before finally shifting in a less than smooth manner . Over time both it and I learned to shift in sequence with each other. I'm still working on breaking in the engine on my '06 and so far I haven't had any problems - though the same "odd shifts" that I experienced while it learns my driving style are happening again. I also drove a friends '05 and she noticed a significant change in its shift after I drove it for a bit (I drove it far more aggressively than she does).

I don't have this problem. Must be 'cause I got a 6 speed manual!
I control when it shifts baby! |

Is this problem occuring when you're on a cold engine/transmission or if you've just driven uphill? I've attached an informative (kind of long) document that does explain some of the programming behind the adaptive transmission. I know its the ZF 6AT on the 5-series, but it's similar to our 5AT.
I know for some reason the X3s seem to have a more aggressive shift pattern and consequently it likes to run the revs higher in each gear as opposed to say, every other BMW. Maybe it's a way of compensating for the modest power....? I do agree the upshifts occur a bit later than I prefer for normal driving. |

Got that too
Same here. I even brought it to my dealer thinking something was wrong. Dealer said nothing was wrong, no error codes in the transmition. He did feel it during test drive though. Then it went away everything was smooth again. Sometimes it does it again but most of the time it's smooth. At first I thought it was because of my K&N filter but it did it also when I put the stock filter back. Doesn't bother me as long as it doesn't damage anything in the car.

UPDATE: The shifting has smoothed out considerably now at approximately 800 miles. I don't know if the transmission "adjusted" to my style of aggressive driving, or if the tranny simply broke in a bit. But at any rate, the shifts are nice and smooth now..

What I do have wondered is that when you roll and slow down let's say for stop sign, and do the lazy stop without don't stop completely, then quickly press the acc pedal to move on, the tranny engages in a bit harsh way. It's as if it had disengaged the gear and then all of the sudden realizes that we're going again.... cmyX5go: do you know what the software upgrade did? - p |
