2.5si VS 3.0si: real world difference?
Can anyone comment on the power difference between the two on their A/T flavor ? My main usage for my future X3 would be around town mainly together with some highway... Had a E46 328i before and I felt it was too powerfull for my need. I know that the 2.5si is not the same engine since it is the evolution of the European 328i but I'm concerned if its extra power compensates the extra weight of the X3. |

Hi dragonii, :xoutpost:
Can't believe no one has replied to this, especially several European members we have here. Here's my 2 cents... First of all, why don't you get the diesel? Those seem to be prefered over there and we wish we could get them here! Also, we don't have a choice on the engine. The 2.5 is not offered here. It's a 3.0si or nothing. Second, and more to your point, I bought the 3.0i over the 2.5i (2005 model, 225 HP) FOR the extra power. The gas mileage ratings between the two were not great enough to warrant going with the smaller 2.5 engine. I'm not sure but doesn't the 2.5si put out 215 HP? That's pretty close to what I've got and the 225 does me fine. Hope that helps a little and good luck with your choice!

Thanks for the reply.
Concerning the diesel, I wouldn't be suprised if it counted for 95% of the X3 sales here in Europe. My problem with the Diesel (having one now) is that BMW, like most of the other European car companies, is selling their Diesel engines with particule filters installed at the factory. While ecological it makes a lot of sense, in terms of maintenance, apparently you can run into a lot of problems if you do a lot of town driving like me. This is due to the need of the filter to clean itself of the particules using high temperatures. To get to these temperatures, you need to do at least 20m of driving at a speed above 90km/h (which I rarely do). Apart from this small niggle, the perspective of driving everytime with a cold and therefore loud Diesel engine is putting me off (did I mention I own a Diesel already ?). But one Diesel is not another so before any buy decision, I'm deciding to test both the 3.0D and the 3.0si. |

Are your rear tires worn out after 1K kms? Even if the the answers to the above questions are all "yes"...I really still don't understand...but then I'm having a tough time focusing on things other than how I'm gonna put this M5 V10 motor in this MCoupe's engine bay.... just kidding...and go for the more powerful motor, you can always step on the gas pedal less... Be good, TomK |
