X3 Transfer case HELP!!!
I have a problem with my 2005 X3 transfer case. Thare was a bearing whyning noise from the transger case, so I took it apart and discovered a MAJOR problem inside http://picasaweb.google.com/11496776...eat=directlink This bearing I can not find ANYWHERE because BMW replaces the entire transfer vase in case of any malfunction. Spare parts are only available from broken or used transfer cases. All companies who say that they rebuild this ATC400 transfer case are actually replacing broken parts with used ones. Only spare parts available are main bearings (they are quite common) and chain. Usually manufacturers of transmissions are offering components separately but Magna Steyr does not do that. Here in Siberia new transfer case will cost me $3000 which I think is WAY too much for a single bearing. This ATC 400 is the only transfer case instelled in BMW X3 through the entire model line. So If you have a broken transfer case or know somebody who does PLEASE let me know 'cause I am quite desperate. I will be glad to pay pretty decent money for the pictured part. Payment - visa, direct bank transfer, paypal. We can even run it through ebay (have 100% positive feedback). Can arrange local pickup in Miamy FL area and payment in cash. Thanks for reading! Any Advise highly appreciated Last edited by nikitich; 06-16-2010 at 12:01 PM. Reason: picture link incorrect |

There are very few options available, because it is an X3.
The X3 was based on the E46 in general, but the E46xi used a New Venture 124 transfer case, which was used by other manufacturers as well. The X5 used a NV125 transfer case, same as the NV124 but with a chain instead of gear drive, since the vehicle didn't have the same tight space constraints. There are parts available for the NV transfer cases, as they are used in many other vehicles. Magna bought NV from Daimler and GM some years back, but there are aftermarket parts sources. The problem with the X3 (and the 2004+ X5) is that they use a different transfer case, with X Drive (variable torque, not fixed). The X3 was the first model with this system, and uses an ATC400 (BMW designation). The E53 X5 uses an ATC500, presumably with more torque capacity. The E70 X5 uses an ATC700, with the same torque capacity but some minor changes. These transfer cases may be built by BMW, or Magna, or someone else, it isn't clear. Although Magna assembled the X3 under contract to BMW, they didn't build many parts for them. It is BMW that isn't distributing parts in this case, not Magna. Since the transfer case appears to be proprietary, there are unlikely to be new aftermarket parts sources. I did some searching for North American sources for ATC400 parts, and came up with nothing. I think your options are a used box from a salvage yard, or a new box from BMW (close to $3000 by the time you get it there). If it was just the bearing, you could try and get a bearing number to cross-reference, but the photo appears to show wear beyond the bearing itself. After you do get it repaired, I suggest you follow BMW recommendations for the correct lube. Transfer case failures do not appear to be common. Since it is an X Drive transfer case, it uses special oil, which is rather expensive. I am not sure if that contributed to the failure, but it is worth watching out for. Good luck.

Well, used transfer case would be the last option to consider for 2 main reasons: Its bulky and heavy= expensive and sloooow shipping and you will never know if this bearing inside is ok. I did some research and it turns out that there are 2 main reasons for ATC400 transfer case failure here. An electric motor mulfunction that leads to permanently engaged 4wd and death of the friction pack. second - the shown bearing falls apart. We have an idea that it could happen due to the very cold temperatures (this winter was extremely cold often lower than -35 -40 C) At these temperatures at the beginning of the ride the case is not properly lubricated due to the construction of the transfer case.
My total mialage is 50 000 miles. Bought in in CA 2,5 years ago with 35k miles. Black/terracota 3,0 l. I tried to change oil before taking apart transfer case but noise did not go away. I did use a specific BMW oil and also did programming that resets TC. Old oil was just dark, nothing wrong, level full |

I see that you took apart the transfer case so I wonder if you have pics available as I am collecting information about this atc400 in order to possibly understand the reason of the fault some x3 owner have experienced.
BTW did you solve your problem...and how?
